New paper on bacterial protein secretion published in Scientific Reports
The osmotically-inducible protein Y (OsmY) is an Escherichia coli protein we applied in our Bacterial Extracellular Protein Secretion System (BENNY). In this work, we performed random and combinatorial mutagenesis on OsmY to improve total production of secretory target protein in E. coli. The OsmY(M3) variant secreted an estimated 100 mg target protein/L of culture, which is 6.7 ± 0.7 times more target protein compared to the wild type OsmY. Our work also showed that OsmY(M3) improved the extracellular production of three proteins originating from diverse organisms and with diverse properties, demonstrating its potential for varied applications.

Fighting the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic
Kang Lan collaborate with other Sheffield research teams to manufacture SARS-CoV-2 virus components for COVID-19 antibody tests. These materials are now being used successfully by local Sheffield hospitals and University research laboratories to produce and validate robust and reliable antibody tests against SARS-CoV-2.

Presentation at EUROMAT 2019 in Stockholm, Sweden
Started in 1989, the EUROMAT is an international conference series in the field of materials science and technology in Europe. Kang Lan gave a presentation on “Converting industrial waste to polyhydroxyalkanoate using Cupriavidus necator H16”.
7 March 2019
Kang Lan was awarded the Global Challenges Research Fellowship.
Kang Lan was awarded the Global Challenges Research Fellowship to work on international projects to address some of the biggest and most challenging problems faced by those living in the Global South. Her fellowship project focus on tackling the environmental damage caused by persistent plastic waste in ASEAN.
