Attendance and engagement with your programme of study
There is a School policy for attendance and engagement and each unit, short-course, programme has a minimum attendance requirement (details will be in the individual handbooks). Professionally accredited programmes will have their own attendance requirements set by the professional body and will be stated in the relevant handbook.
University general regulations require you to attend your programme of study, engage with the learning process and actively contribute to the learning activities arranged for you and your peers. Under the regulations every student is required to abide by the University of Sheffield Student Code of Commitment: https://www.sheffield.ac.uk/ssid/ourcommitment
You must mark your attendance for all teaching sessions via digital check-in. Information is available here:
Digital check-in Information for Students
If you cannot attend your timetabled event, doing nothing will automatically record you as absent. Therefore you must record an absence on the iSheffield app, choosing the absence option does not mean it is authorised.
Any concerns raised by school staff or your peers about your attendance and or engagement will be considered under the School policy arrangements and may result in:
Failure of the assessment and denial of credits assigned to the units concerned
Referral for review under the General Regulations as to the Progress of Students https://www.sheffield.ac.uk/ssid/complaints-and-appeals
All timetables identify a start and end time for taught study. Students should ensure they arrive in time to start as late entry may be disruptive and affect the learning experience of others.
The lecturer has the right to deny access to the room for latecomers and students that are persistently late may be referred for review by School and/or faculty.
If you are ill during study time you need to report for each missed session you via iSheffield. Choosing the absence option does not mean it is authorised.
If you feel your studies and/or assessments have been affected by your absence please discuss this with your academic tutor and if appropriate submit the APHNM Extenuating Circumstances google form.
For those programmes/units/short course with a placement element, if sickness occurs during clinical time you must inform the placement as well as the relevant programme/unit co-ordinator, but you should also complete the sickness absence form.
For Trainee Nurse Associates who are on an alternative placement you need to inform the alternative placement area and your base placement manager as well as notifying the university.
The University of Sheffield uses the lecture capture software “Encore” which will by default record lectures in enabled rooms. Recordings can be accessed via Blackboard for your convenience. This records sound and images on the screen only from the lectern PC. For more information please go to: https://www.sheffield.ac.uk/cics/encore/students
If you would like to record a lecture that is not captured by Encore, the recording of lectures by students is only permitted in certain circumstances. Please negotiate this with the lecturer responsible for the session(s) you wish to record.
Whilst you are a student, you will have opportunities to formally evaluate the quality of your programme/module as per the University of Sheffield standards. Student evaluation is an essential part of assuring the quality of the school's provision and provides us with essential feedback on your experiences of your studies. It is important that we receive a good response rate to student evaluations, as your feedback is an essential part of helping us to maintain the quality of teaching and learning provision, and may benefit you and future students. For those students on professional programmes this is part of their professional responsibility. Quality reviews of departments’ teaching and learning consistently demonstrate ways in which student feedback often does lead to changes being made to units and programmes.
Evaluations are collected to form part of a written report that is submitted to the Board of Studies which meets annually and make recommendations based on the findings. The following issues are usually addressed:
Teaching and Learning support
Module Content
Assessment and Feedback
Overall satisfaction
We will endeavour to provide you with feedback on the issues that students have raised through the evaluation process and how we are addressing these.
You are encouraged to nominate/elect a student representative to discuss issues at the Board of Studies/programme development group/student staff committee. Management of evaluation is reported from Boards of Studies to the Student Voice Committee and the School's Learning and Teaching Committee. It also reported to the University through the Annual Reflection of the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health.
Feedback will be collected via the Tell US surveys that will be sent out to students at the appropriate times during your studies.
