The IDEA group couples intelligent alloy and microstructure design methodologies utilising computational tools and machine learning with high-throughput make-test-characterise methodologies. Our work accelerates the design and service insertion of new alloys with superior material properties for industrial applications towards decarbonisation.
Working in close collaboration with industry, we work towards sustainable solutions for real problems from alloys for civil aviation jet engine components, to hydrogen reformers, high entropy alloys for hardmetal tooling applications or automotive corrosion coatings and beyond. Furthermore, we emphasise microstructure development and control in manufacture, delivering performance on demand using fundamental physical metallurgy principles.
