Hedgehog Friendly Campus @ Sheffield

Take a look at our Hedgehog Friendly Campus Sheffield Spotlight video! If you are struggling to view this on our website, please click here to watch it on YouTube.

Hedgehog Friendly Campus is a programme for Universities, funded by the British Hedgehog Preservation Society. The idea was actually started by a previous staff member at the University of Sheffield!

Hedgehog Friendly Campus is designed to help hedgehogs thrive, by supporting participating teams in making their University more hedgehog-friendly. There's lots of ways to promote biodiversity, increase awareness, raise funds and collaborate with the community. These small actions will add up to make a big difference to hedgehogs.

Our team at Sheffield received it's Bronze award in 2020, Silver Award in 2021 and then Gold Award in 2023! We have a management team who meet regularly to brainstorm ideas and communicate activties to staff and students through our newsletter. We help hedgehogs on campus primarily through regular litter picks in collaboration with other sustainability centred teams, as well as hosting mammal surveys every year and doing public outreach events!

Our team also won the national Hedgehog Friendly Campus Lockdown Litter Pick Challenge in 2020 - over 260 people from 22 universities across the country collectively picked almost 700 bags of litter, with Sheffield topping the list at 158.5 bags!
