Stephen Aderinto

Department of Chemistry

I had my bachelor’s degree in Pure and Applied Chemistry at Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Nigeria, from where I graduated in November 2011 with first-class honours. Being a recipient of the Chinese Government Scholarship administered by the China Scholarship Council (CSC), I moved to China in September 2014 to undertake a postgraduate master’s degree in Applied Chemistry at Lanzhou Jiaotong University. In late September 2018, I came to the University of Sheffield to pursue a doctoral programme in Bioinorganic Chemistry, having won a university scholarship. I am an ambitious, passionate and diligent person. In addition to all this, I am a visionary and I have a couple of golden goals I am striving at. Perhaps the most appealing one at the minute is the pioneering of the Global South Researchers’ Network at the University of Sheffield which aims to support and give voice to early-career researchers (ECRs) from the Global South.

Research interests: Development of novel biological imaging modalities for cancer disease; DNA-binding probes; therapeutics; theranostic; d6 and d8 transition metal complexes; ruthenium(II) and iridium(III) polypyridyl and cyclometallated complexes.

"Scientists out there are plethoric, but in the face of this fact, science remains my passion. I want to be truly outstanding in my chosen endeavour of science. To achieve this, I daily engage my creative mind to innovate in the lab. I believe I will contribute immensely to the research world, especially that I daily draw inspiration from Michael Faraday, a master scientist whom I hold in high esteem. "

Kishwar Shethi

Department of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology

Graduated from Department of Botany, University of Dhaka and completed post- graduation twice; one from the same department as stated before and the other from Imperial College London with Commonwealth Scholarship in the year of 2013. Later on, I have started my career as an academician in the Department of Botany, University of Dhaka and since now serving there. There I worked in plant anatomy, biochemical and structural response of plants towards abiotic stresses. At present I am working as a PhD student in Department of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology, University of Sheffield with an aim to investigate the effect of abiotic factors modulating chloroplast signalling towards plant development using both Arabidopsis and Rice plants. I have varieties of research skills including plant tissue culture, plant anatomy, molecular biology and developmental biology. I am a nature-loving person with a positive attitude to all living beings. Along with my research activities I am always interested to be involved myself on social/volunteer activities. Enjoy my time with family and travelling. I believe that variation is the best thing created by nature and bestowed us so that we can bring the best from these by our observation and perseverance.

Research interests: Molecular Biology, Biotechnology, Plant Developmental Biology, Plant Anatomy, Plant Tissue Culture, Stress Biology.

"Live simple life with positive approach to all living beings."

"Innovations leading to energy conversion applications is my long-term goal in life. As a constant learner and a scientist at work I see everyday as an opportunity to take me a step closer to it. Apart from this. communicating my work in simple understandable format to non-specialists and children through intersting hands-on activities is my passion. "

Kezia Sasitharan

Department of Chemistry

I completed my Bachelors of Science, Chemistry (2015) from University of Madras, India. I worked at Indian Institute of Technology Madras under the supervision of Prof T Pradeep on fabrication of metallic nanostructures using ambient droplet sprays, funded by the Indian National Academy of Science (2016) and later in 2017 I graduated with a Masters from the Department of Chemistry, Christ University, Bangalore (2017) as a University Grants Scholar.

After spending the summer working with Arcler Press Ltd on the editorial team of a graduate level textbook, I began my PhD in October 2017 under the supervision of Dr Jona Foster, Dr Ahmed Iraqi and Prof David Lidzey with a University scholarship. My PhD focuses on exploring 2-D metal-organic nanosheets as new generation photoactive materials in organic bulk heterojunctions. In 2019, I was awarded the DAAD Rise Professional Scholarship to work at Helmholtz Centre Berlin for materials and Energy.

Research interests: Nanomaterials for energy conversion and storage especially 2-D materials and supramolecular structures for OPVs and OLEDs; novel hybrid solar cell designs for improved charge carrier transport and collection; plasmonic nanostructures and other strategies for improved light trapping and conversion in photovoltaic devices.

Maria Wang Mei Hua

Department of Animal and Plant Sciences

PhD researcher funded by the Grantham Centre for Sustainable Futures, investigating how to achieve sustainability and conservation goals in the tropics, focusing on natural rubber, a globally traded commodity crop. She is interested in the interaction between economics, environment, and social issues – especially the perspectives of local and indigenous peoples. Hailing from a rural town in Malaysia, she holds a M.Sc. in Plant Biology and Conservation from Northwestern University, USA, where she studied the genetic diversity of an underutilized Malaysian fruit tree called ‘cempedak’. She has also worked on a global database of forest carbon stocks and flows at the Smithsonian Institution, and co-led a tree census in a long term research plot in a rainforest in Puerto Rico.

Besides her research, she also actively engages in sustainability at TuOS and beyond, including contributing to the University’s first Sustainability Strategy, and being involved with the Students’ Union Sustainability Committee.

Research interests: forest and biodiversity conservation, sustainable development, food and agriculture, tropical biology, environmental economics, ethnobotany, anthropology, climate change, data science.

Skills: data management, statistical analysis in R, GIS.
