This page provides an overview of some case studies so you can find out about what is already happening in Makers Valley, and get inspiration for your own projects. All case studies are from EWB Engineering for People Design Challenge

Each case study gives additional information to the main challenge areas. As part of understanding the context, it is important to review the case studies and look for opportunities to collaborate with various people, or other stakeholders, within Makers Valley.

Skills Village - Engineers Without Borders UKSkills Village has a large number of spaces available for different companies to rent or for use for hosting events, training or workshops.

Victoria Yards - Engineers Without Borders UKVictoria Yards is a renovated site providing spaces for local makers who value both social development and commercial enterprise equally.

Water for the Future - Engineers Without Borders UKWater for Future aims to facilitate the clean up of the Jukskei river, which suffers from an influx of sewerage.

Richard - Engineers Without Borders UKRichard, a civil engineer, volunteers to help clean and improve the safety of the streets in the local area.

Impi Brewery - Engineers Without Borders UKImpi Brewery Co is a bar within Victoria Yards, they collaborate with Lakeside Brewing in Cape Town to produce beer.

Sobae - Engineers Without Borders UKSobae are based in Victoria Yards. They buy ripe fruit from seasoned local farmers and street vendors and turn it into sorbet.

Smelt - Engineers Without Borders UKSmelt create unique, hand-blown glass art and hosts glass-making workshops.

Luella - Engineers Without Borders UKLuella is a poet, maker and is currently studying craft with the Imbali Visual Literacy Project. She moved from Cape Town to Johannesburg in 2016 to gain a new perspective on life.

East Jozi and Sneakers4change - Engineers Without Borders UKEast Jozi and Sneakers4Change are two local businesses founded by young local entrepreneurs Sibu and Hector.

Community street gardens - Engineers Without Borders UKCommunity street gardens are beautiful vegetable gardens located throughout and just outside of Victoria Yards. The gardens are a cost effective model to provide good nutrition to residents of Makers Valley.

Umphakathi Development and Training Centre - Engineers Without Borders UKUmphakathi Development and Training Centre, located in Skills Village, provides vocational training in plumbing and general construction trades for young people.

Livingstone creche - Engineers Without Borders UKLivingstone creche is a daycare centre located on Frere road in the heart of Maker’s Way. The majority of the children that attend the creche live in the area with their families.

Primal Spirits Distillery - Engineers Without Borders UKPrimal Spirits is a truly artisanal distillery, as they grow and prepare many of their own botanicals, in order to produce high quality spirits.
