How did you first hear about the Equal Opportunities Fund?
I first heard about the Equal Opportunities Fund through a careers meeting with the Arts & Humanities Careers Hub. It was recommended that I looked into it over the summer [of 2025] for any potential uses for my third year, ahead of graduate applications.
What motivated you to apply for the programme?
I had already submitted my application for teacher training, and was getting prepared for the interview process. It then dawned on me that I did not have any professional clothing, and I did not have the funds to buy some ahead of the interviews. Then I remembered the Equal Opportunities Fund, and that I could apply for money reimbursements for professional clothing. I had nothing to lose, so I submitted my application.
Can you describe your experience going through the application process?
The application process was incredibly straightforward, with each step clearly explained. Staff were also quick and considerate in replying to any questions that I had during the process; they were incredibly helpful!
What did you use the funding for?
I used the funding to purchase £100 worth of professional interview clothing, ahead of my teacher training interviews. I bought two blazers, two professional trousers and three pairs of professional shoes.
Did the funding help you take part in opportunities you otherwise wouldn’t have been able to?
I was incredibly nervous about what I was going to wear ahead of my teacher training interviews, as I did not have anything professional. The Equal Opportunities Fund gave me the necessary clothing, which reassured worries about my appearance. I knew I looked professional - which made me feel professional! During the interviews, I felt like I was taken seriously - and I believe that was partly down to the professional clothing. Irrespective of how well I spoke during the interview, if I did not look respectable, then I would not have received an offer. Overall, the Fund played a key role in my interviews and subsequent teacher training contract offer for September.
What has been the most valuable aspect of the funding?
The most valuable thing from the funding was the quantity of professional clothing that I could buy - I could wear two outfits’ worth of clothing, for both my interviews. This is not just short-term funding, it will last for many years - and I can use the clothing again when I am starting my teacher training in September. It is going to have a positive impact on my professionalism - and it meant I was not at a disadvantage compared to other candidates.
Is there anything you wish more students knew about the Equal Opportunities Fund?
I wish more students realised the diverse options that are available for the Equal Opportunities Fund. The Fund covers conference costs, professional services, professional clothing and much more. I encourage students to reflect on investing in their career prospects and apply for the Fund - you have nothing to lose! It saved me significant stress and financial burden ahead of my interviews - and now my next steps are sorted. I wish I had considered it in my First or Second Year!
