Exploring Singapore with the boss
Wurood's internship in Singapore
My internship was with GIANTECH Engineering Pte Ltd. Their core business is to service many different brands’ automation equipment on board sea going vessels. I wanted to gain experience in the Oil and Energy field of Chemical Engineering which is a branch that I am considering a career in, so this placement really was perfect for me!
The role and responsibilities as a Project Coordinator
Actively participate in meetings with outside stakeholders and discuss minutes with PM
Conduct workshop sessions with engineers
Curate content through the use of maker's manuals, engineer interviews and SOP's
Undergo training for platform software
Input content into platform using bite-sizing techniques
Verifying content with engineers
Help PM with day to day administrative duties and ensure project stays on
schedule when PM is on holiday.
It was definitely a hands on experience and I really felt part of the team, and although sometimes the workload was hard, my immediate supervisor was really helpful and ensured that I paced myself as I had kept forgetting that the timeline for the project was 3 years and not 3 months!
I really enjoyed the fact that the boss of the company had complementary Muay Thai classes twice a week for his employees, which really helped with team building and strengthening friendships in the office. And also the complementary condo that the company had sorted out for me was lovely!
Wurood's advice
Go with your gut feeling! If it feels like its the right thing to do, it probably is!
Zoe's marketing internship with Moju
I decided to do a placement with Moju as I wanted to get some useful experience over the summer. I felt a placement would be a good way to gain an insight into different career paths, as well as gaining new skills in areas that I am interested in pursuing.
Preparing invoices for customers such as Sainsburys and Waitrose through accounting software such as unleashed, isupplier, wesupplier and Xero.
I wrote competitor reports based on how different brands were marketing their products and benchmarked factors such as USP, brand summaries, ingredients and nutrition.
Market research- I did this by exploring different locations where Moju's target market shopped, looking out for new brands and recording their labels to ensure their marketing strategies and ingredient lists were noted.
Zoe's advice
My piece of advice would be for students to get as much experience as they can, even if they don’t think they will necessarily go into that career. It's useful to see how a business works, develop new skills and meet experts in their field.
Product Placement much?
Elliott with one of the campers
Elliott's summer with Camp America
My sister had participated in the Camp America program for the previous two Summers at a camp in Massachusetts; it was her positive experiences and encouragement that made me decide on doing this placement. I also have ambitions of being a teacher in the future and I realised that working at a camp would give me relevant work experience in this field of work.
During the main camp day I was a Soccer Specialist, responsible for coaching approximately 120 kids of ages 4-16 years old in separate groups of 10-15 campers for sessions that would last 30-60 minutes. This required me to do lesson plans a week in advance of the sessions, and to provide fun and engaging soccer activities for the campers to participate in.
Occasionally our responsibilities also included being a 'Bus Counsellor' before and after the main camp day. This required us to board the bus that would collect and drop off the children and to entertain and supervise them on their trip to and from camp.
Elliott's advice
Commit to writing a short journal entry every day to help you to remember the activities that you have partaken in. This will help you with any reflective tasks after the placement and will also help to retain any good memories that you have of the placement.
