City Connections

Networking is often an activity that we shy away from, although we know how successful it can be to find future career opportunities. That’s why trialling networking with your peers early on can be the best way to start making those valuable connections. Northern City Connections is your chance to visit a range of organisations and gain an insight into the exciting career opportunities open to you.

What is ‘City Connections’?

City Connections is designed to support students from under-represented backgrounds to develop their networking and communication skills, commercial awareness and enhance their career prospects.

The first of two events, Northern City Connections, happened 22nd November where students met and networked with 3 Sheffield-based employers.

The second event, London City Connections, is happening on the 13th March, following a similar pattern but with a huge range of employer visits and networking opportunities in London.

Who is this programme for?

City Connections is open to students from the Faculty of Social Sciences and the Faculty of Arts and Humanities and Level 2 and 3. The programme is also prioritising students from widening participation backgrounds. As you are eligible for Equal Opportunities in Careers, you also match the criteria for this programme. A full list of criteria can be found on the City Connections page.

What can I expect?

To begin with, you will attend a pre-event workshop, to prepare you for the day itself. You'll receive advice and information to prepare you and help you make the most of the business workshops and meet the other students and staff taking part. You’ll cover commercial awareness, networking, logistics and tell you about the alumni and businesses we’ll be hearing from. You’ll also support you in setting up or improving your own LinkedIn profile.

The programme will continue for your city visit where you'll meet many employers across the city. After a day of workshops at different organisations, you'll have the chance to meet a range of UoS alumni from different sectors at the evening networking event. Even better, food and drink throughout the day will be provided!

To round up the programme, you’ll attend a post-event workshop to learn about how you can use your experience as you think about life after graduation as well as have the opportunity to reflect on and record the skills you have developed. You’ll also receive advice for following up contacts and signposts to other University opportunities.

“City Connections was the most valuable event that I have attended at the university so far. I now feel that I have acquired the skills and confidence to network professionally and how to gain the most out of these opportunities”
