Winners from the 2024 Engineering Researcher Symposium.
Who are we?
The Engineering Researcher Society (ERS) is a mutual body providing a VOICE for all early career researchers, including postdoctoral and contract research staff, across all departments within the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Sheffield; providing Development Opportunities (DO) and also promoting a COMMUNITY for networking and socialising. Want to find out more or get involved? Contact us!
Our annual Development Opportunities Fund initiative provides flexible bursaries available that can be used in a variety of ways to advance your professional development. Our thirteenth round closed on 30th January. Keep an eye out as we hope to run it again next year, it's great experience for completing any type of competitive funding application. See our Development Opportunities page for more information.
We run an annual researcher symposium in collaboration with the Engineering Graduate School and the Engineering PGR Student Committee. The 2025 symposium will be held on 17th June in 38 Mappin Street, see the website for full information and submission details.
Since forming in 2011, the ERS has grown and thrived within the Faculty of Engineering with many notable achievements including:
Research staff representation on the Research Staff Development Committee (in compliance with the Concordat to support the career development of researchers)
UKRSA: national association for research staff in the past we have had a representative on the committee
VITAE and Researcher Development Framework advisors
Women in Engineering panel membership
Collaboration with Research Services, HR, Library, Faculty Management
Induction programme consultants and trainers
The Engineering Researcher Society aims to create a supportive community of Engineering researchers by encouraging social and research networking within and between departments. We hold occasional social networking events. We are involved in the development of the Researcher Mentoring Programme, which offers professional career guidance and support from the wider academic community. We also offer the opportunity to attend researcher-specialist development opportunity seminars with other like-minded researchers, and have strong links with the Women in Engineering network.
Providing opportunities for the professional development of research staff has been a core aim of the Engineering Researcher Society since it's inception. See the dedicated Development Opportunities page for more details.
