News showing our collaborative spirit!
We were delighted to host Marco Chacin - Head of Robotics and Actuators at AIRBUS Broughton, and his team member, Nicole Jones - Robot Programmer. During the visit, we had the opportunity to show our project posters and demonstrators, which raised more potential use cases that will bring more collaboration between The University of Sheffield and AIRBUS.
Some of the major projects we discussed were:
CO-AIMS – a UKRI programme aiming to deliver, collaboratively with manufacturing businesses, leading-edge technologies for robust, safe, trustworthy, fault-tolerant, and co-operative autonomous AI systems for manufacturing and establish a platform for their design, development, testing, and validation.
LandONE – a collaborative Airbus-led initiative developing lighter, lower-maintenance, and greener landing gear systems through digital engineering.
RESCU-M2 – a groundbreaking national programme designed to drive innovation and economic growth through the development and integration of smart machines, robotics, and AI in circular manufacturing.
By bringing these projects together, we’re creating a joined-up innovation ecosystem that strengthens industry input, ensures real-world relevance, and accelerates technology adoption.
The rest of the session continued with a showcase of our demonstrators, a lunch talk with Professor Ashutosh Tiwari, and an open Q&A session with Marco Chacin and the DMG team, where we refined the potential use cases and received positive feedback on our new lab facilities. Marco Chacin and Nicole Jones continued their schedule, having a chat with our School employability lead and discussing more collaboration opportunities with our Space Instrumentation Lab (SIL).
Our Head of the Laboratory, Professor Ash Tiwari, was nominated by the Vice Chancellor's office to attend the Royal Garden Party at Buckingham Palace for his contributions.
"It was a memorable experience meeting people from all walks of life, making such valuable contributions to the community. Many thanks to The University of Sheffield and Professor Sue Hartley OBE." Prof. Ash Tiwari.
Well done, Ash 🎉🎉
We welcomed Prof. Yongjing Wang's research team. The visit included a lab tour focused on our sensorisation and robotics demonstrators for manufacturing. The demonstration sessions were interactive, allowing us to spark an engaging conversation with Prof Wang. Thanks a lot, Dr Ze Zhang, for hosting our guests!
Minoru D., Michael F. and Nestor S (2nd, 3rd and 4th from left to right) were part of a RESCU-M diligence visiting EUROSTAR facilities on finding use cases for ReX processes. The site visit included a tour of their window replacement and wheel maintenance processes. This was a super insightful visit on the technical challenges affecting the Train repair market. We are looking forward to building an effective collaboration with Eurostar.
We completed our move to our new home (lab)! It was a rainy day, but we made it following all H&S procedures!
Kudos to the team for this TITANIC effort!
