Data-centric manufacturing is any manufacturing where data is used or produced in order to gain data-driven insights.
We prefer the term data-centric manufacturing as opposed to AI/data science, or similar terms, to be more inclusive of the role all those in manufacturing play in ensuring that data-driven insights are relevant and actionable. Data-centric manufacturing involves everyone and creating the right team is key to it's success.
Data has many, and varied, uses in manufacturing, including:
understanding and improving the manufacturing process,
to identify and reduce defective products,
reducing energy and waste,
identifying and reducing downtime,
data-driven design and development,
logistics planning and management,
health and safety,
model-based manufacturing,
knowledge management.
