Although some students manage to secure a placement in the first semester, it is more likely that you'll be offered a role between February and April, and some students receive offers as late as August. When you receive an offer, ensure you are satisfied with the role. If you have any doubts or questions, please speak with one of your tutors or a member of the Faculty Placements Team.
Once you have accepted a role, there are a few simple steps you need to take:
Email: biosciences-placements@sheffield.ac.uk and let us know about your offer. If you have already informed Amanda Wright, Andrew Stainton, or Mark Collins, skip this step.
To have your placement approved by the university, you must upload your placement details to the Student Placement System (Inplace), which can be accessed through MUSE.
If you are not registered on a programme with a placement year, you must complete a Change of Programme form and email it to biosciences-placements@sheffield.ac.uk. You can find the link to the form HERE. Scroll down to the bottom of the page. You can find a list of programme codes here.
You must ensure that you complete any documentation required by your placement employer. If you have any concerns about this, please contact the Placements Team.
If you are moving away from Sheffield, you'll need to organise your accommodation. Your placement employer may be able to assist and give advice. You can also visit sites such as www.spareroom.co.uk to find flats and houses that have rooms available to rent within the area you will be working.
If you have a Learning Support Plan, it is recommended that you contact the student welfare team in Biosciences to discuss whether you might need some extra support whilst on placement
You need to organise your student finance; see this link for details of the placement year tuition fees.
As a fully registered student, you will continue to be exempt from council tax. You can request an exemption form here: council tax.
Register with a local GP/Medical Centre in case you are ill during your placement year.
Make sure you know the plans for day one (Where to go? Who do you report to? What's the dress code?).
International students: Make sure you have a National Insurance Number.
For overseas placements, standard holiday travel insurance cover is unlikely to be adequate. Therefore, it is essential that all placement students are covered under the University of Sheffield travel and personal accident insurance policy, which is available free of charge for the duration of the placement. Students should:
Record the details of their travel.
Complete the Apply for Travel section.
Complete an Overseas Travel Risk Assessment form and email it to mark.collins@sheffield.ac.uk for approval.
If a visa is required, read this guidance and apply for your visa well in advance of your placement start date.
There is also a recording of the faculty pre-placement briefing talk, which you can watch at this link
