Dr Mark Collins is the academic lead for placements in the School of Biosciences. Mark can offer advice on the more technical/scientific aspects of job interviews in Biomedical Science/Biochemistry/Genetics.

Amanda Wright is the Placements Adviser for the Science Faculty and is available to help with any aspect of your placement search. Help identifying suitable roles, checking CVs, cover letters and applications, preparing for interviews and assessment centres, advising when offered a role, making speculative applications, etc.

Placement Student eMentors. You can contact Bioscience students currently on placement for advice before interviews. Here is a list of where Bioscience students are on placement, if you wish to contact someone please let us know and we will reach out to them for you.
2026-2027 Placement student representatives
We are bioscience students preparing for our upcoming year in industry and serving as Placement Representatives. Our role is to represent placement students, build a supportive network, and create an approachable space where experiences, questions, and advice can be shared.
We want to help make the transition into placement as smooth as possible, while keeping everyone connected throughout the process. We are always happy to chat, offer guidance, and support current students as well as anyone thinking about applying for a placement in the future
Careers Service. You are encouraged to make use of the team of advisors, web resources and workshops offered by the university Careers Service to help you decide what sort of placement you want, as well as practical aspects of job search, applications, online tests, interviews and assessment centres. Support during your placement
General Advice and Support. Our Welfare & Engagement Team and Undergraduate Team are available to answer any questions or point you in the right direction if you're not sure where to find help. You can contact them by emailing biosciences-placements@sheffield.ac.uk
Welfare Advice. Lauren Carne supports students in Biosciences with any welfare issues. If you have any personal worries or questions about doing a placement, please contact them by emailing biosciences-welfare@sheffield.ac.uk.
Academic tutor. You are also encouraged to discuss your interest in doing a placement with your personal tutor. They may be able to offer advice on working in different types of organisations and on aspects of specific placements. They can also provide a reference for you, but you should ask them if they are happy to do so.
