The main focus of your placement is to learn as much as possible, develop new skills, and make new friends and colleagues.
Although you'll be rightly focused on your new job, you'll remain part of the university whilst on placement, and you need to do the following:
You must enrol as a student on placement with the university. You can do this online via the student portal. You can still access all university services while on placement.
Make sure you periodically check your student email account and complete regular School of Bioscience check-ins.
When you know the details of your supervisor and have a work email address, please email those details to biosciences-placements@sheffield.ac.uk
Information about funding of placements is available in this document and also via this link
An academic staff member (usually your tutor) from Biosciences will have a virtual meeting with you around January - March. Part of the meeting will be with you and the member of staff, and part will also include your line manager. This will be arranged in advance.
The placement is an accredited part of your degree, and you must complete the mySkills pathway and create a placement poster. For more information, please consult the placements handbook and the BIS Year in Industry/Placement Student (On Placement) Blackboard site for assessment submissions. The placement year does not count towards your final degree classification, but it is assessed as pass/fail based on the two placement year assessments.
If you have any questions or worries whilst on placement, please get in touch by emailing biosciences-placements@sheffield.ac.uk
As a fully registered student, you will continue to be exempt from council tax, and you can request an exemption for council tax here.
Above all, make sure to make the most of the opportunity; some good advice from a former placement student is available here and here.
If you are experiencing serious issues during your placement, you can contact your personal tutor or the Placements tutor (Mark Collins) for advice.
For more general placement related enquires please email biosciences-placements@sheffield.ac.uk in the first instance.
