Are your students starting to consider what they might do after school or college? Post-18 education might be for them.
This covers a few different options: Higher Education (traditional and non-traditional), Apprenticeships and Higher Technical Qualifications.
Higher Education
University is probably what most people think of when they think of 'Higher Education' Really, Higher Education means studying a qualification at Level 4, or above. A-Levels are a Level 3 qualification, for example. Students can study a University-Level qualification through alternate routes, such as at The Sheffield College!
Higher Education qualifications involve studying one subject in a lot of detail over one, two, or three years - depending on which course they choose. They could even study up to 5 years, if you decided to purse Medicine. Students should ideally have a career goal in mind when choosing your University-Level course.
Have a look to see which courses are available through UCAS: UCAS Courses
Students can submit their application via UCAS.
Another route that students could take would be to consider an Apprenticeship.
This is where they would hold a full-time working position with an employer, and study for their Level 4 qualification (or above) at the same time - this means they will be gaining experience, and earning whilst they are learning!
Learners may do 3-4 days a week with your employer, and 1-2 days per week in college working towards their qualification.
Apprenticeships are a great option; they offer some flexibility in timetable, a chance to gain work experience and a salary. They can be helpful for learners with a specific career goal in mind.
Apprenticeships are advertised with The Sheffield College in a few different ways, some may be advertised with the course and employer, and for some of the courses you may have to find your own employer. Please read the details of the job opening careful, you can contact our Apprenticeship team if you have any queries on apprenticeships@sheffcol.ac.uk
