Accelerated Reader (AR) Program
We will be utilizing the Accelerated Reader (AR) Program at Shawnee again this year. This program is linked to the STAR tests that students were already taking. The results of those tests will provide a recommended level of books students should be reading to help them become better readers.
As students read books, they will be encouraged to take an AR quiz over the book. The goal is to score an 85% or higher on the quiz. Research shows that students who read at least 15 minutes a day and score at least 85% on their AR quizzes will raise their reading level above those who don’t read every day and take the quizzes. Therefore, we will be encouraging students to read each day and take quizzes as they finish the books. Points are awarded for each quiz based on the book and the quiz score. A log will be kept in the classroom, so students can see their progress throughout the school year.
To help motivate students to be excited about reading and the quizzes, I will be offering quarterly challenges. Students who meet the challenge will be allowed a classroom celebration. Those who don’t meet the challenge will have to sit out of the celebration. To further motivate the students, we will have a school-wide challenge for each class to meet their AR goals.
The goal for each quarter will be 300 classroom points! Each student must earn at least 20 points on their own during this time to participate in the celebration.
