Tier 3 Responsive Short Term Services
School counselors engage in Tier 3 interventions in response to emergency and crisis situations. Tier 3 is meant to be short term individual counseling. If progress is not made after 6-8 individual sessions, the school counselor should make referrals to resources on campus or within the community. School counselors are not professional therapists and therefore should refrain from long term counseling of students. Sadly, when school counselors are preoccupied with long term one to one counseling their ability to deliver a core curriculum to all students and Tier 2 small group counseling is diminished. A co-constructed systemic plan for Tier 3 services needs to be developed in coordination with all student services personnel.
