5th Grade Art

5th grade Crane origami and story of Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes

Remote on Tuesday and Thursday, March 23 & 25.

Hello Ms. Jones 5th grade class! ;0)

I still cannot do zoom though my voice is returning, the endless tickle keeps my eyes watering and creates fits of coughing.

I found a copy that may be easier for students to listen to since the accent is more mild.

I am including a list of questions to answer once you have completed the story about Sadako.

#1 What is Sadako's last name?

#2 Where did Sadako and her family live?

#3  What was Sadako's favorite sport?

#4  When the family launched lantern over the Ohta River, whose name did Sadako put on hers?

#5  In the story what was referred to as a "thunderbolt"?

#6  What creature did Sadako believe would bring good luck?

#7  What was the name of Sadako's friend in the hospital?

#8  How many cranes did Sadako make?

#9  What is Sadako holding up on her statue in Peace Park?

#10  Create your own question, and answer it.

Hello Ms. Jones 5th grade class! ;0)

Please read below in the next sections for more instructions.

I cannot do zoom because I lost my voice.

Remote students, since many of you are in different spots of the book.  I have included a video that you can play at your own pace and start where you last remember the story.  The reader has an accent, so you will need to listen cafefully to catch all the words.

Friday, January 15, 2021.  We are remote today so if you have your iPad and want to zoom, please pop in.  Otherwise, you can do this simple drawing challenge and show me next class!

Drawing Challenge:  Grab a sheet of paper and a pencil...

Create a gameboard with a theme that you like and create at least 30 steps from start to finish.  Add some images and designs that go along with your theme and color it up to look appealing.  Ideas of themes could be anything (appropriate for school) like sports, fantasy creatures, aliens, dinosaurs, musical bands, haunted houses, castles, racing cars/bikes, and etc.

Also, on the back, sketch 3 figurines that you would make to move around the board.

For example, if you did a theme of wild animals, your figurines could be a tiger, a giraffe, and a bear, oh my!

Have fun,

Hello Ms. Jones 5th grade class! ;0)

We are having mini art lessons each day for the ending of December 2020 to learn and explore a fun design in drawing. You can log on at any time of day that works for you!

For December 16th, I am going to ask you to make a very simple drawing of a symbol you like for Christmas/winter. For example, a candy cane, a pine tree, a present, a snowman, a gingerbread man, and etc.

Please share the image in Mrs. Jones'  ClassDojo under Art Mini Activities Portfolio.

All mini lessons for December will be posted in ClassDojo.

Have fun,

Ms. Futerko

December 21st:  Simple Origami folds to get to a Kirigami design which is the art of folding AND cutting paper!  We are making a snowflake!

Take a normal 8 1/2 x 11" printer paper and fold the top left corner down to the right side until it makes a triangle leaving the excess paper below.

We are making the paper square like we did in class before.

Fold the bottom edge up to create a crease to follow when cutting.

Cut neatly and carefully.

Fold the square in half and then the rectangle it forms and back to a square and keep it folded before rotating.

Rotate just slightly to the right so the right  side corner is now pointing at your belly.

Just like this.

Now fold both the right and left side inward one third the width of the shape and crease.  Look at the next steps for clarifcation on this.

Fold the right side bottom edge, 1/3 of the way to the left.

It looks like this.

Now, fold the left side bottom edge, 1/3 of the way to the right side.

It looks like this.

Now, draw a curved line at the top that will cut off all the uneven parts.

It looks like this.

Draw your simple design you made last week at the top of the paper, but from the bottom edge of your design, draw a line to the right and left side edges so that the paper there will remain.

Add one or two little partial shapes below for interest, but again don't cut across the whole paper.

Cut carefully around your design and little partial shapes below.

Open it up and see your masterful design!

Color and design the surface.

Enjoy!
