Elementary Gifted learners have skills, talents, and needs that begin taking shape in the early years. Perhaps you've experienced some of these traits - advanced language skills, heightened creativity, a meltdown when they can't do something perfectly at the first try, emotional intensities. Even in early childhood, students may display these traits. As they enter the elementary school years, their giftedness may become evident in their classroom performance, inquisitiveness, out-of-the-box thinking, and academic achievement.
In the Wilson Gifted Department, we view our role as one of support - not just academically, but as a safe space for our Gifted students to be their true selves; to explore passions and connect with peers of similar ability. We seek to support their unique social and emotional needs at all levels, from perfectionism to anxiety to interpersonal skills.
With all of my students, my goal is to help them find the things that light their fire. I provide students with the opportunity to do a "Passion Project" - a self-directed project on any topic of their choosing - where they can explore interests and uncover new learning. Above all, I seek to foster a love of learning in my students and to grant them the space to discover things about themselves and the world around them that they might not have otherwise had the chance to in a school setting.
Each child has a unique genius that resides within. We are tasked with helping them to uncover that genius and use it to make an impact.
