Mrs. Gomm's Classroom

Science is all about digging in, finding answers to questions, and utilizing scientific method to learn more about their surroundings and other topics. The curriculum used in our science class is Science and Technology Concepts, which was developed by the Smithsonian Institution National Science Resources Center and Carolina Biological Supply Company.

Hands-on experiments, real life application and investigations will lead us through this subject area. Students will be given plenty of opportunity to "flex" their science muscles as they use the scientific method and observe practical and hands-on application situations including chicks hatching and live creepy crawlers!

**In 5th grade we switch classes for content (science and social studies), so our class with rotate with Mrs. Kriebel's class for these class periods. Mrs. Kriebel will be teaching social studies and I will be teaching the science content.

The units of study for Science are as follows:

Embryology

Students are given the opportunity to care for chicken eggs all the way through to hatching. They will record, observe and interact with the eggs through each developmental stage of the 21 day incubation process. One of the best moments of 5th grade is meeting and holding the chicks they cared for during the incubation period.

Motion and Design

Physics and motion take center stage in this unit as students work to create, build and test using the skills learned. They will build vehicles, learn about friction and kinetic and potential energy, and look at the effect of gravity on motion.

Animal Studies

Creepy crawlies and amazing animals join our classroom during this unit. Students observe, care for and provide a habitat for several different animal species. African dwarf frogs, fiddler crabs, and millipedes will be studied using all five senses as student use research based inquiry to collect data and synthesize information revolving around these animals' behaviors.
