The 4 Cs Unit

Communication

In the beginning of the unit the students learned that communication is important in completing tasks. They practiced how to use effective communication by completing a variety of tasks. The kindergarten and first grade classes discuss and develops ways to communicate their feelings in an effective manor in the classroom. The characters from Disney's Inside Out, are used as our motivation. Students finish this lesson by creating 1 class emotion and using the Book Creator app to document their work on their tablets.

Second grade students listen to the story Click, Clack, Moo. They must answer a question in Google Classroom, and discuss how the characters in the book used effective communication skills. They also participate in the class minefield activity. Where one student is blindfolded, and the other students must communicate with him/her to navigate the student across the carpet without stepping on any mines (pillows and stuffed animals).

Collaboration

Now that the kids understand effective communication, they will need to use this important skill to collaborate with others to create a project.

In kindergarten and first grade the students worked listened to the story of The Little Blue Truck. They learn that helping each other and working together is a more effective way to complete tasks. Then in some classes the students either worked together on a parachute/ball activity, while others completed a cup stacking challenge. Both activities require the students to communicate and collaborate effectively together.

The students in second grade classrooms listened to a story about a boy in Africa, who made his own toy, called a Galimoto. The students then were assigned small groups that had to plan and create their own Galimoto. First the students designed a blueprint of the Galimoto. Then, using up-cycled materials donated by families, the children created their toys. Each group made 1 toy.

The last cycle of collaboration, the students in kindergarten and first grade used the tablets to make a digital Discovery book using the app Book Creator. In Book Creator the children took a photo of the Galimoto and labeled it in their book. The students in second grade used a Google Chrome extension called Screencastify. This extension allowed the kids to create a video diary entry of their project using the camera. The file was then uploaded to their Google drive, and shared to me via Google Classroom. All of the projects were creative and original pieces of art, not to mention fun toys!

Critical Thinking

Students take their communication and collaboration skills and use them in small groups with the critical thinking challenges.

The kindergarten students recall what happens to the three little pigs when the big bad wolf comes to blow down their houses. Then the students have a chance to build houses out of different materials to protect the pigs.

First graders listen to the story Going Places. We discuss how critical thinking is thinking outside of the box. Then the students are given their kit, and asked to make something that can cross the finish line.

Second graders learn how architects and engineers use critical thinking to solve problems and create. We read Iggy Peck Architect and Rosie Revere Engineer. The students then have 10 minutes to create a tower with 15 pipe cleaners. Extra challenges are thrown into the activity to make it more challenging.

Creativity

Finishing off our 4Cs unit is the Creativity lessons. Here the students use all of the 4Cs to create an object, using some of our upcycled materials.

Kindergarten and first grade students listened to the stories of Not A Box and Not A Stick. We discussed how the characters in these two books used their imaginations to create elaborate objects using only a box or a stick. Students then worked as a team to transform shoe boxes into something elaborate and creative. Individual students were all given a popsicle stick that had to be transformed or used in something new!

Our second graders began with a class discussion on the 4Cs, and they explained how they used the 4Cs in previous activities. Then they were given the task of creating a bridge using only plastic straws and twist-ties! The bridges had to be at least 12 inches long, span between two chairs, and hold a small toy. Our engineers did a fantastic job! Check out some of the hard work below.

Coding and Computer Programming Unit

(Click on the photo/video to open up the album.)

Creating Our Own Programs!

This is one of the most popular units for all of the grades! Kids learn about computer programming through a variety of lessons. All of the unites start with an 'unplugged' lesson, where the students program and give directions for different activities.

Then our kindergarten and 1st grade students begin to program fuzzes in the app Kodable. Later they will work on other apps such as The Foos, Scratch Jr, and Path. Path lets the students program our Dash and Dot robots!

Second grade students work on programming lessons from Code.org. Then they move through stations with Lightbot, The Foos, Daisy the Dinosaur, and Blockly (which is where they program the Dash robots). The students finish the unit by creating an animated scene using coding blocks in the Scratch Jr. app.

Fairy-tale Engineering & Simple Machines

(Click on the photo/video to open up the album.)

Kindergarten and 1st Grade

Once upon a time, students did not know or understand the concept of simple machines. But, that was before this third quarter unit! In this unit the students not only study and learn about simple machines, they build and create simple machines to solve a problem for characters from popular fairy-tales.

They make boats that act as wedges, to get the Gingerbread man safely across the stream. Pulleys are created to help Jack and Jill fetch a pail of water. Inclined planes are required to get Rapunzel down from the tower. Little Red Riding Hood uses a lever to launch her cookies over the dangerous forest to grandmother's house. The Three Billy Goats create a vehicle that uses a wheel and axle to get them quickly across the bridge.

These fairy-tale STEM challenges require the students to use the 4Cs and engineering and design process to devise a working simple machine!

Electric Circuits

(Click on the photo/video to open up the album.)

Our second grade students get to study and engineer devices using electrical circuits. The third quarter unit is all about the engineering and design process. At end of the quarter students have to work as a team to build a 'scribble bot' that uses a series circuit to move.

In order to understand the concept of electrical circuits, the students learn through a variety of tasks. They build circuits using LittleBits, complete a circuit using copper tape, learn about the parts and types of circuits, play online circuit games, and build a series circuit using limited supplies.

These young engineers SHOCK me with their ingenuity and drive to succeed!

Maker-Space & 4Cs

(Click on the photo/video to open up the album.)

At the end of the year the students are given various challenges. They might be given limited materials to create something, or they might all need to create a certain object but use different materials from the other groups in the class.

Some classes were given 1 piece of aluminum foil to create a new object. Another activity students had to build a tower. Each group had a different material (red solo cups, cardboard bricks, legos, duplos, etc).

It is amazing to witness the collaboration, critical thinking, and creativity the students show in class!
