Being enrolled in the School of Humanities and Social Sciences can often present what may seem like daunting challenges to find a job or get started on a fulfilling career. However, if you don't mind being let in on a little secret, a degree in the humanities is actually far more valuable in today's job market than what we are sometimes led to believe. Employers today look for people who can think critically, communicate clearly, have great presentation skills, and more complex understandings of the world at large. The rest of the day-to-day tasks can be taught. The previously mentioned skills and attributes are much harder to teach but are exactly what is instilled in students studying the humanities!
While those skills are being cultivated in your departments and studies, the Magner Center can help you with crafting a perfect resume, writing a convincing cover letter, and preparing for an interview. We also guide students to different resources to search for job and internship opportunities. While these opportunities can be further discussed with a career counselor at the center, below are a few links to help you get started.
HireBC is Brooklyn College's job portal. All jobs and internships posted here are approved by the Magner Center and targeted specifically for current students and graduates. You can filter the opportunities by major or field and you should check frequently as new postings are added every day.
9 Ways to Find a Paid Internship is a page that the Magner Center developed to show students a few different ways to land an experience-building opportunity that won't set you back financially.
Unpaid Internship Stipends are offered by the Magner Center for current Brooklyn College students who are applying or have plans to apply to an internship that is either unpaid or underpaid. It is strongly encouraged that you apply even if you don't have an opportunity lined up at the moment - if you can't find one, we'll help you!
