珍道具 (Chindogu) is the unique Japanese art of making an invention that just barely solves an everyday problem, an invention that is usually described as “un-useless”. What does that mean? Take a look for yourself:
Ramen Fan
Cat Mop
Umbrella Shoes
There are 10 rules of Chindogu, but let’s focus on these four:
Chindogu must be (almost) completely useless – The invention should almost be more of an issue than the problem it is trying solve.
Humor must not be the sole reason for making the Chindogu – The goal of the invention must be to solve a real problem. The humor must come from the complexity of your solution to the problem.
A Chindogu’s uselessness must be understood by all – Everyone should be able to identify the problem your Chindogu is trying to solve just by looking at it.
You must use recycled or repurposed materials - We want to make sure that we are not adding to the problem of wastefulness in our society
1. Define the problem - something in your daily life that is mildly inconvenient. – Having trouble staying 6 feet away from people? Can’t stop touching your face? Having a hard time keeping your iPad standing up while you’re trying to do work? All great examples of small problems that could use a Chindogu solution. Use one of these or come up with one of your own!
2. Go through the Engineering Design Process AND follow the rules of Chindogu (above) and create a working prototype of this solution. – It doesn’t have to be polished or perfect, but it should give us an idea
3. Take a video of your Chindogu in action and upload it to Google Classroom.
