“As a single mom I felt vulnerable like I could not protect them.”

I moved to Shaker 23 years ago. I have three children ages 25, 23 and 18. The majority of time I figure out the challenges of being a single mom, on my own. For example when my kids dealt with bullies, I wanted to bring it to the attention of the police but that actually would have made things harder.

As a single mom I felt vulnerable like I could not protect them.

I currently work 4 jobs. I show my children how to support themselves and how to keep going even though it’s sometimes hard that they should stay joyful. Some of the hardest parts are keeping food in the house, cooking after being at work all day long and working to keep them in school. Programs such as SAMS help me alot because it helps to know that I have options and that I am not alone. The Shaker community needs more places that have options for teens.

I have overcome my challenges by being a girl scout leader, advising Girls on the Run, being a horse farm driver and working at a bridal shop and more. I put myself in spaces that are uplifting. I am hopeful that my children will work towards improving themselves by watching me work hard. My oldest son has a 7yr old son and I am proud to see him be a hands-on parent.

My daughter just graduated and is headed to Kent State University. My sons despite “ hitting their heads” a couple times keep coming back and don't give up. It helps me to watch them and to remind myself to keep going.
