A Pandemic Moment: One on One, 2021

I made this quilted banner specifically for S.A.M.S. who support African American women who are single parents. The vertical banner has a black background with six vignettes of a parent interacting with a child was completed in August 2021. The quilt was made entirely of cotton fabrics with details added with colored pencils. The text was machine embroidered.

I took artistic license to broaden the theme of single African American mothers and their children’s activities during the pandemic quarantine to include other single parents. I wanted to recognize that single parenting exists with fathers and other mothers of different heritages. I created the six vignettes with a single parent interacting with their child in what are important activities – learning, talking and even dancing.
