Scotia-Glenville Athletic Placement Process (APP) Policy
The Athletic Placement Process (APP) is a testing procedure that determines if a student is ready to compete in high school sports. The APP is intended for gifted athletes who are physically, emotionally, and academically mature enough to compete at a higher level.
Athletic Placement Procedures:
Varsity Coach Recommendation- Only a varsity coach can recommend a student athlete to take the APP test.
Parent/Guardian Permission Form (Click Here)
Administrative Approval- The athletic administration will confirm that the student is suitable for consideration, which includes the likelihood that the student would play in at least 50% of games. If the student is not academically or socially ready, the student should not proceed through APP.
Medical Clearance- The district medical director will ultimately determine a student's physical development that will lessen the likelihood of the student being injured by participating in the level and sport desired. If a student has attained an appropriate level of physical maturity (Tanner Score), and has a height and weight that are comparable to those proposed team members, the student can proceed to the next step in the process. The medical director is instructed to take into consideration height, weight, muscle mass, and Tanner rating as compared to athletes he/she would compete with. (Tanner scale: Click Here)
No testing is done without tanner score, FamilyID approved, Varsity Coaches Recommendation and Parent Permission Slip.
Physical Fitness Testing- Administered by a certified physical education teacher who is not a coach of the sport for which the student will be trying out. The President’s Physical Fitness Test has been selected as the test for this process, and the student must meet 85th percentile level for their age in 4 out of 5 test components. Scotia-Glenville Testing Procedure:
Each athlete taking part in the APP fitness testing will be given 1 day to take the test and 1 day to make up components they might not have passed.
On day one, the athletes are given 1 chance at each component.
On day two, the athletes are given 1 chance to make up a component they failed on day one.
Bowling and Golf are not required to do the fitness testing per NYS
APP FAQ’s
Parents cannot recommend a student athlete for the APP process. Only Varsity Coaches can recommend a 7th or 8th grader to take the test. PE teachers and modified coaches can suggest athletes to a Varsity Coach, but, ultimately, the recommendation must come from a Varsity Coach.
The Tanner Scale is a district requirement and not optional. We follow what our medical director states for student safety.
The APP process is for exceptional athletes who are physically, emotionally and academically mature enough to compete at a higher level. Testing should NOT be used for increasing numbers on sports teams.
Student Athletes can prepare for the fitness test by going on the district's athletic website and looking up the testing components. The test is administered exactly how it is stated in the components document from NYS. (Testing Components can be found here: Click Here)
Who needs to go through the APP process: only 7th and 8th graders who are recommended by a Varsity Coach to play up on JV or Varsity.
