Our first two days of Science will kick off with an exploration of a Social Emotional Curriculum called ZONES of Regulation. Students will learn what the four zones are and strategies we can use to help us be ready to learn!
During these two days, in addition to building a positive classroom culture where everyone feels comfortable to share an idea, I will also be modeling the words hypothesis and observation to prepare the students for our first unit.
Lesson One (takes two class periods) Slide Deck Available Here
Lesson Two Slide Deck Available Here
Unit Objectives:
Scientists help us understand the world around us.
Scientists do experiments and make observations.
They use evidence to support their ideas.
Unit 1 Lessons:
Lesson 6: Unit 1 End of Unit Assessment
Unit Vocabulary:
Science, Experiment, Observations, Senses, Hypothesis
Unit 1 Lab Materials:
Teacher Lab Materials (kool-aid lab demonstration): koolaid, cups, hot and cold water, spoon
Student Lab Materials: None required
Additional supplies such as paper and coloring supplies may be required for regular lessons.
Unit 2 Objectives:
A force is a push or pull that makes things move.
A push moves things away from you.
A pull moves things towards you.
Forces can also make things speed up, slow down and change directions.
Unit 2 Lessons:
Lesson 1: Pushes and Pulls (Engage & Explore) (edited 2/1/21)
Lesson 2: Forces Video and Discussion (edited 2/3/21)
Lesson 3: Lab (Explore & Elaborate) (edited 2/3/21)
Lesson 4: Reading and Vocab. (Elaborate) (edited 2/12/21)
Lesson 5: Kahoot! Review (edited 2/22/21)
Two days allotted for review lesson due to regression that may have occurred during break.
Lesson 6: Unit 2 Assessment (edited 2/3/21)
Lesson 7*: Video, Game and Acting Activities (edited 2/3/21)
Unit Vocabulary:
Force, Pull, Push, Strong, Weak
Unit 2, Pushes and Pulls Lab Materials:
Teacher Lab Materials: sample of student supplies to model with
Student Lab Materials (lesson 3): 5-10 Cheerios, 1 straw, 1 piece of string or thin yarn that is 1 ft long, 1 Zip-loc bag (to store items)
Additional supplies such as paper and coloring supplies may be required for regular lessons.
Unit 3 Objectives:
Weather tells us what the sky and air around us are like on any given day.
The weather can be sunny, cloudy, windy, rainy, stormy or snowing.
Scientists can predict the weather by understanding patterns.
Unit Lessons:
Lesson 1: Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs Read Aloud (edited 3/5/21)
Lesson 2: Weather Journal, Song and Game (edited 3/5/21)
Lesson 3: Weather Stations (Lab) (edited 3/14/21)
Lesson 4: Weather Hat and Vocab (edited 3/15/21)
Lesson 6: End of Unit Assessment for Unit 3
Unit Vocabulary:
Weather, Cloudy, Sunny, Rain, Snow, Wind, Rain Gauge
Unit 3, Intro to Weather Lab Materials:
Teacher Lab Materials: copy of student materials to model
Student Lab Materials: cotton balls, glue, light blue construction paper, straw, feather
Additional supplies such as paper and coloring supplies may be required for regular lessons.
Unit Objectives:
We will learn to reduce, reuse and recycle.
People can have a negative impact on Earth's land, water and air.
People can also make a positive impact through choices we make.
Unit Lessons:
Unit Vocabulary:
Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Pollution, Landfill, Impact, Problem, Solution
Unit 4, Reducing our Impact on Earth Lab Materials:
Teacher Lab Materials: 2 Large clear plastic containers, tongs, a funnel, coffee filter, vegetable oil, plastic, paper, dirt, water
Student Lab Materials: no materials needed
Additional supplies such as paper and coloring supplies may be required for regular lessons.
Unit Objectives:
The sun shines down on everything around us.
Sunlight warms the Earth's surface.
Shade from tents, umbrellas and plants can reduce the warming caused by the sun.
Unit Lessons:
Lesson 2: Chocolate Lab (STEM Activity)
Lesson 7*: Enrichment Activity - EPIC Book and Video Collection
Unit Vocabulary:
Sunlight, Heat, Shade, Thermometer, Temperature, Melting
Unit Objectives:
The place a plant or animal lives is called a habitat.
Living things get food, water and shelter from their habitat
There are many different habitats on Earth.
Unit Lessons:
Lesson 6: Kahoot! Review of Unit
There is no end of unit test for Unit 6. The kahoot can be used to assess student understanding.
Lesson 7*: Enrichment Activity - EPIC
Lesson 8*: Genius (Passion) Project
Unit Vocabulary:
Habitat, Forest, Desert, Artic, Jungle, Needs, Adaptations
