Our first two days of Science will kick off with an exploration of a Social Emotional Curriculum called ZONES of Regulation. Students will learn what the four zones are and strategies we can use to help us be ready to learn!
During these two days, in addition to building a positive classroom culture where everyone feels comfortable to share an idea, I will also be modeling the words hypothesis and observation to prepare the students for our first unit.
Lesson One (takes two class periods) Slide Deck Available Here
Lesson Two Slide Deck Available Here
Unit Objectives:
Scientists help us understand the world around us.
Scientists do experiments and make observations.
They use evidence to support their ideas.
Unit 1 Lessons:
Lesson 4: Reading and Vocab. (Elaborate) (edited 1/29/21)
Lesson 6: Unit 1 End of Unit Assessment
Unit Vocabulary:
Science, Evidence, Experiment, Observations, Fair test, Senses, Hypothesis
Unit 1, What is Science? Lab Materials:
Teacher Lab Materials (kool-aid lab demonstration): koolaid, cups, hot and cold water, spoon
Student Lab Materials: None required
Additional supplies such as paper and coloring supplies may be required for regular lessons.
Unit Objectives:
Some materials have properties best suited for certain purposes.
In this unit we will learn about stretchiness, absorbency and strength.
Comparing different materials involves doing experiments.
Unit 2 Lessons:
Lesson 1: Paper Towel Lab (edited 2/1/21)
Lesson 2: Material Properties & Purposes Video (edited 2/4/21)
Lesson 3: Strong Homes (Engineer Drawing Activity) (edited 2/8/21)
Lesson 4: Material Properties Game (edited 2/12/21)
Lesson 5: Kahoot! Review (edited 2/22/21)
Two days allotted for review lesson due to regression that may have occurred during break.
Lesson 6: Unit 2 Assessment (edited 2/26/21)
Lesson 7* Extension Activity: Scavenger Hunt for Material Properties (edited 3/2/21)
Unit Vocabulary:
Property, Purpose, Flexibility, Strength, Stretchiness, Absorbency
Unit 2, Material Properties and Purposes Lab Materials:
Teacher Lab Materials: sample of student supplies to model with
Student Lab Materials (lesson 1): 3 Different brands of paper towels, 3 Ziploc bags, 1 Teaspoon, 1 Cup of water
Additional supplies such as paper and coloring supplies may be required for regular lessons.
Unit Objectives:
Engineers use science and math to solve problems.
Engineers also build and test things.
Each time they re-design it, the solution can get better.
Unit 3 Lessons:
Lesson 1: Ice Cream Dilemma (Lab) (edited 3/8/21)
Lesson 2: Video and Discussion (edited 3/9/21)
Lesson 3: How Strong is Paper? Stations (edited 3/14/21)
Lesson 4: Paper Airplane Stations (edited 3/15/21)
Lesson 6: Unit 3, End of Unit Assessment (edited 3/8/21)
Unit Vocabulary:
Engineer, Engineering, Design, Problem, Solve, Improve, Test, Fail, Analyze
Unit 3, What is Engineering? Lab Materials:
Teacher Lab Materials: a sample of student materials to model with
Student Lab Materials: a variety of building materials (some suggestions: Paper plates, Cardboard, Felt or other fabric, Aluminum foil, Popsicle sticks, Pipe cleaners, Wood pieces, Plastic bags, Modeling clay, Paper bags, Plastic cups, Styrofoam cups, Newspaper)
Additional supplies such as paper and coloring supplies may be required for regular lessons.
Unit Objectives:
Water can change the shape of land.
Wind can change the shape of land too.
We can slow down or prevent these changes by using science.
Unit Lessons:
Unit Vocabulary:
Erosion, Rainfall, River, Wind, Coast, Waves, Soil
Unit Objectives:
Heating and cooling can cause changes we can see.
Sometimes these changes are reversible and can be changed back.
Sometimes these changes are non-reversible and cannot be changed back.
Unit Lessons:
Unit Vocabulary:
Heating, Cooling, Reversible Change, Non-Reversible Change, Solid, Liquid, Melting, Freezing
Unit Objectives:
Matter comes in different forms: Solids, Liquids and Gases.
A solid keeps its shape.
A liquid takes the shape of its container.
A gas fills its container.
Unit Lessons:
Lesson 6: Kahoot!
There is no end of unit test for Unit 6. The kahoot can be used to assess student understanding.
Lesson 7*: Enrichment Activity - EPIC
Lesson 8*: Genius (Passion) Project
Unit Vocabulary:
Container, Weight, Matter, Solid, Liquid, Gas, State of Matter
