Our first two days of Science will kick off with an exploration of a Social Emotional Curriculum called ZONES of Regulation. Students will learn what the four zones are and strategies we can use to help us be ready to learn!
During these two days, in addition to building a positive classroom culture where everyone feels comfortable to share an idea, I will also be modeling the words hypothesis and observation to prepare the students for our first unit.
Lesson One (takes two class periods) Slide Deck Available Here
Lesson Two Slide Deck Available Here
Unit Objectives:
Scientists help us understand the world around us.
Scientists do experiments and make observations.
They use evidence to support their ideas.
Unit 1 Lessons:
Lesson 6: Unit 1 End of Unit Assessment
Unit Vocabulary:
Science, Evidence, Experiment, Observations, Fair test, Senses, Hypothesis
Unit 1, What is Science? Lab Materials:
Teacher Lab Materials (kool-aid lab demonstration): koolaid, cups, hot and cold water, spoon
Student Lab Materials: None required
Additional supplies such as paper and coloring supplies may be required for regular lessons.
Unit Objectives:
We'll discover that when things vibrate they make sound.
That sound can also make things vibrate.
Vibrations are what let us hear each other speak.
Unit 2 Lessons:
Lesson 1: Intro to Sound and Kazoo Lab (edited 2/1/21)
Materials for the kazoo lab are listed below.
Lesson 2: Video and Discussion (edited 2/4/21)
Lesson 3: Read Aloud of Sounds All Around (edited 2/8/21)
Lesson 4: Vibrations make Sound Game (edited 2/22/21)
Lesson 5: Kahoot! Review (edited 2/23/21)
Two days allotted for review lesson due to regression that may have occurred during break.
Lesson 6: Unit 2 Assessment (edited 2/23/21)
Lesson 7*: Enrichment Activity: Fun with Sounds (edited 3/3/21)
Unit Vocabulary:
vibrating, sound wave, sound, hearing, vocal cords, eardrum
Unit 2, Introduction to Sound Lab Materials:
Teacher Lab Materials: sample of student supplies to model with and a sharp object for poking holes
Student Lab Materials (lesson 1): Cardboard / Paper towel tube, Wax paper (3 in diameter circle), 1 Rubber band, Optional: Decorations (marker, tissue paper, paint etc.) *** It may be helpful to have cardboard rolled and securely taped / glued into a roll before beginning lesson with students, you could also put a couple holes in each tube before the lesson to save time as well ***
Additional supplies such as paper and coloring supplies may be required for regular lessons.
Unit 3 Objectives:
Living things grow, take in nutrients and reproduce.
Non-living things don't do those three things.
There are many living and non-living things all around us.
Unit 3 Lessons:
Lesson 1: Read Aloud and Living / Nonliving Game (edited 3/7/21)
Lesson 2: Living vs. Nonliving Video and Discussion (edited 3/15/21)
Lesson 3 - Virtual Nature Walk and Observations (edited 3/15/21)
Lesson 4 - Vocab Review and Poster Project (edited 3/17/21)
Lesson 5 - Kahoot! Review (edited 3/25/21)
Lesson 6: End of Unit Assessment for Unit 3 (edited 3/7/21)
Lesson 7*: Enrichment Activity - I Spy Class Game (edited 3/25/21)
Unit Vocabulary:
Living, Non-living, Nutrients, Reproduce, Dead, Food
Unit 3, Living vs Nonliving Lab Materials:
Teacher Lab Materials: No materials needed.
Student Lab Materials: No materials needed.
Additional supplies such as paper and coloring supplies may be required for regular lessons.
Unit Objectives:
Plants grow from seeds.
Plants need water and light to grow.
Plants grow best in soil, but some can grow without it.
Unit Lessons:
Unit Vocabulary:
Seed, Plant, Sunlight, Roots, Stem, Leaf, Flower
Unit 4, Plants Need Water and Light Lab Materials:
Teacher Lab Materials: model of student supplies
Student Lab Materials: white cup, brown cup, pod, water, seeds, magnify glass
Additional supplies such as paper and coloring supplies may be required for regular lessons.
Unit Objectives:
External parts are on the outside of something.
External plant parts include the leaves, stem, flowers, fruits and roots.
These parts work together to help the plant survive.
Unit Lessons:
Unit Vocabulary:
External Part, Flower, Fruit, Leaf, Reproduce, Root, Seed, Stem, Vegetable
Unit Objectives:
Plants need the right amount of water and light to grow best.
Soil quality can affect how well plants grow.
To find the best conditions you need to experiment.
Unit Lessons:
Lesson 1: Video and Discussion - Plant Growth Conditions
Lesson 2: Plants and Animals have Traits - Video and Discuss
Lesson 3: Our Class Traits - graph
Lesson 4: Guessing Game - Amazing Animals Traits
Lesson 5: Among Us Review Game
