Welcome to the Spoken Arts DepartmentÂ
at Ruth Asawa School of the Arts🎤🎶
We are a vibrant and dynamic community where poets, rappers, singers, and multi-talented young artists come together to nurture their passion for the arts. Our vision is to foster a creative and rigorous learning environment where students can explore the power of language, develop their unique voices, and create meaningful and impactful work.
In our department, we believe that spoken word is not just an art form; it's a catalyst for personal growth and social change. We empower students to become active creators of their own narratives through daily writing exercises, collaborative workshops, and hands-on projects. Together, we delve into the rich history of modern poetry, tracing its evolution and amplifying the diverse voices that have shaped the spoken word world.
Students gain a deep understanding of the techniques and tools used in modern spoken arts, from rhythm and rhyme to metaphor and imagery. They develop their public speaking skills, learning to command a stage with confidence and charisma. Through constructive critique and peer feedback, they refine their work, strengthening their writing and performance abilities.
The learning doesn't stop in the classroom. We believe in the power of real-world experience. Our students have the opportunity to perform their work in two annual productions that showcase the incredible talent and creativity within our department. We also collaborate with esteemed partners such as City Lights Library, Glen Park Library, and Aptos Middle School, providing additional platforms for our students to share their voices with the wider community.
We foster a supportive and inspiring environment where artists thrive together. We're committed to providing the dedicated time and attention each student needs to develop their artistic craft over their four years with us. We believe in a holistic approach to education, and we encourage students to maintain a strong academic foundation alongside their artistic pursuits, ensuring a balanced and fulfilling high school experience.
Whether you are an aspiring poet, rapper, singer, or simply someone who loves the power of language, we invite you to join us on this exciting journey. In the Spoken Arts Department, you will discover your voice, find your community, and create work that resonates with the world.
In our Spoken Arts classes, we begin each session with the Mayan phrase "In Lak'ech," meaning "You are my other me." This practice fosters a profound sense of interconnectedness and mutual respect, reminding us of our shared humanity and the power of our words to uplift and inspire. By embracing this philosophy, we cultivate a safe and supportive learning environment where diverse perspectives are valued, and everyone feels seen, heard, and respected. Ultimately, the practice of In Lak'ech strengthens our community by promoting empathy, collaboration, and a deeper understanding of ourselves and others.
Tu eres me otro yo. Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â You are my other me.Â
Si te hago daño a ti.        If I do harm to you
Me hago daño a mi mismo.    I do harm to myself.Â
Si te amo y respeto.         If I love and respect youÂ
Me amo y respeto yo. Â Â Â Â Â Â Â I love and respect myself
