ZOOM CLASSES

As the majority of our course interactions will take place via Zoom, I ask that you adhere to the following:

  1. Log on to Zoom at least 5-10 minutes to troubleshoot any technical or logistical issues.

  2. Add your pronouns next to your name in your Zoom window.

  3. Mute yourself unless you are speaking or instructed otherwise. As the host, I can mute you at any point.

  4. You are encouraged, but not required, to turn your camera on so that we can see you.

    1. If you choose have your camera on:

      1. Locate yourself in a place with little to no background disruption

      2. Make sure there is adequate lighting so that you can be seen

      3. Try to not walk or move from room to room. If you must do so, turn off your video while you relocate. Once you are settled again, you can turn on your video again

    2. If you choose to keep your camera off:

      1. Upload a school-appropriate photo of you as your profile picture

  5. Use the “Raise Hand” feature if you want to say something.

  6. Use the chat appropriately—we are in school, so you want to keep comments appropriate and write respectfully to one another (i.e. NO SHOUTING IN CAPS).

  7. Keep communication respectful and professional.

STAYING FOCUSED DURING ONLINE CLASSES

  1. Practice self-discipline.

    1. Put your phone away if you’re not using it for class

    2. Respond to texts/DMs after class

    3. Resist having irrelevant tabs/windows on your computer open

  2. Don’t engage in other tasks during class.

    1. We only have so much time together during a given week, let’s make the most of it

  3. Decide how you will take notes while keeping the Zoom screen open.

  4. If you arrive mid-discussion, try to not interrupt.

TECHNICAL DIFFICULTIES

  1. If you are having technical difficulties, or know you will be late, email your teacher BEFORE class begins.

  2. If your internet is down, text to notify your teacher (650.542.0186) or classmate beforehand.

  3. If you cannot notify of your absence/tardiness beforehand, please reach out as soon as you can. We want to make sure that you are doing okay, and that you are taking responsibility for your learning!

RESPECTFUL BEHAVIOR AND LANGUAGE

  1. Discipline yourself so that no one has to... and the rest of the 13 Principles of Power.

  2. Be mindful of any behavior that may be interpreted as being harmful, offensive, or uncomfortable.

  3. Be mindful of the language we use with one another; profanity, put downs, and otherwise offensive language directed towards members of the classroom community are unacceptable, even if meant as a joke.

  4. Be open to constructive criticism; try to take it as helpful feedback, not as an attack.

  5. Truly listen to one another and respect one another’s contributions especially in given situations when class discussions, readings, films, lectures, course content and subject may disagree with our personal position and everyday understandings. Diverse opinions, that blend experiences with academic scholarship and research, are important and will be respected.

  6. Act in solidarity. This is not a competition. We are all here to grow in our own ways. So don’t put other people down, encourage them.

PRIVACY & DIGITAL CITIZENSHIP

  1. Do not give out the meeting password to ANYONE who should not be at the scheduled call.

  2. Do not screenshot, photograph, or record any portion of the online class.

    1. Recording any part of a conversation in which there is an expectation of privacy is illegal in California without the consent of all parties

    2. All instructional materials will be posted on our class website and/or Google Classroom; you will be able to review everything we cover

  3. Be responsible with your online presence; mind your digital footprint.

    1. Do not post any inappropriate images or comments in the chat box

    2. No funny business with the virtual background

    3. Remember that everything on the internet lives forever

  4. Identify yourself clearly in all communications.

    1. Example: in a Zoom call, say “This is Mike speaking…”

  5. Conduct yourself with the same thoughtfulness and integrity you would if you were in person.

    1. If you wouldn’t say it face-to-face, don’t say it online

    2. Sarcasm and inside jokes often do not translate well into an online space

  6. Protect your and others’ personal information.

    1. Don’t give out people’s email address without permission

    2. Don’t share your password with ANYONE; consider creating strong passwords

  7. If I find that you are engaging in behaviors that sabotage your classmates’ learning, or that threaten the safety of meeting participants including myself, I will remove you from the meeting. I will then report your behavior to your parent/guardian and the Dean of Students.
