Music is a basic and vital part of the Santa Fe Public Schools. The purpose of music education is to provide each student with the knowledge and skills necessary to be involved in music at the highest possible level and throughout his/her life. Our music program will be exemplary, manifesting excellence and distinction.
In orchestra, your student has the opportunity to learn the violin, viola, cello or bass. Students playing the violin and viola will take their instrument home to practice and return their instruments the next day for class. It is an expectation that these instruments are going home as often as possible to practice.
Students that play the cello and bass will have an instrument that stays at home to practice with. There are school cellos and basses that stay at school for them to use. On rare occasion, these students might be asked to bring them to school for a concert. Students in the OMS orchestra will have at least 4 different performances throughout the school year.
In this class, your student will learn valuable life skills that will help prepare them for their future--skills like time management, working as a team, and dedication.
In addition to these important skills, music is unique in that students get the opportunity to build life long friendships while working on their skills.
Music is good for the brain!
Studies have shown that playing an instrument helps people have healthy, happy, functioning brains. Check out the video below to learn a little more.
