Your ASSIGNMENT for today, firm:
Contact 3 of your friends in class using whatever media you usually use to stay in touch. Tell them to make sure that all their music assignments are turned in up through Friday of last week. Here is the main music web page. They just need to click on their grade for their page of assignments.

The time to catch up is now. I have a new assignment that I may post tomorrow.
Once you have contacted 3 friends with the reminder to catch up on music assignments, email me telling me so, and I will give you a 100 in the gradebook.
Assignment Due Friday, May 15th
Go to the 100 Years page once again! Scroll down to the 1950's. There are a few music examples to listen to. I chose Pop and Rock and Roll examples mostly. The Pop examples show how popular music has evolved from the early 1900's to the 1950's. Rock was brand new and had many early, bright, up-and-coming stars, some you will recognize today because their songs are still played on the radio or as background music in movies. Maybe your mom or dad plays Elvis songs in the car. The Variety Shows on TV were becoming a big thing in the 1950's because there was a TV set in every household now. Listen carefully to the music examples to get a feel for what the music was like back then. Thankfully, by the fifties, we have video examples of most songs. Enjoy! Also, next to the last example there are some questions to answer for your grade this week. One more thing...this is very important...
Please ask your friends if they are aware of this music website, and that they are doing the assignments. For some reason, there are SEVERAL of your friends who have not turned in anything in music, despite my efforts to put clear messages up on Google Classroom, and I have even emailed the parents at least once with a crystal clear message. I don't want to put extra pressure on anyone, but how can I give a student a good grade in a class where they have not turned in any work? Report card time will be here before you know it. Those of you who have been doing the assignments know that there is only 1 per week, they are ridiculously easy, and it takes just a few short minutes to do it. Please give them the link to the music web page and tell them to get busy! Thanks!

Assignment Due Friday, May 8th
Go to the 100 Years page again for more examples of how music has developed over time. If you listen to the radio or iTunes today and hear some of your favorite songs, you can thank all the musicians from the past that I'm sharing with you. Without them, the style of music you now enjoy would never have come into existence. Everything in music has emerged, evolved and matured over enormous spans of time. This week, we're covering a lot, the entire decades of the 1930's and 1940's. We only have three or four weeks left of school, so I want to get at least through the 1970's with you before we have summer break! Read my comments carefully. There are a couple of questions to answer for this week's grade! Have a great week!
Assignment Due Friday, May 1st
Go to the "100 Years" page on this website. Read the two paragraphs I wrote about music in the early 1900's. Listen to the three key song examples of "watershed moments" in music history. For your grade, email me, tell me which song you liked the most and why.
Friday, April 24th
I'm changing it to give you through Sunday at midnight to complete the quiz. It will be "open book," so it will be easy for you. The idea is for you to learn things about music. If you are learning, we are accomplishing good things! After the quiz, we may swing our attention towards other things for a couple of weeks, like music history. Hope all is well! Here is the link for the quiz:
Assignment due Friday, April 17th
Welcome back, boys and girls...hope your Easter was great! I miss seeing you guys!
So far, we have done some music notation research and some music vocabulary. I'm going to upload a small music symbol chart (only a few of the vast amount of symbols). Familiarize yourself with it. Probably next week some time, we will have a small quiz on what you have learned so far. Anything from your three assignments are fair game for the quiz. After you study over the chart, underneath it I will ask one question. For your grade this week, respond to the question either in Google Classroom or just in an email to me. Here is the chart:
If you were playing a piece of music and came across a dotted half note (like the one on the chart), what are you supposed to do with it? What is it telling you to do, as a musician?
NO ASSIGNMENT --- week of 4-6 through 4-10-20
Since we normally meet on Fridays and we have no school, virtual or otherwise on Thursday, Friday or next Monday due to Easter weekend, there will be no assignment due. Enjoy the holiday and God bless you and yours! He is risen!
Happy Easter, boys and girls! He is risen!
Assignment Due Friday, April 3rd
Vocabulary -- the following musical notation terms appear in most Renaissance, Baroque and Classical pieces as indicators on how the music should be performed. You may copy and paste the definitions into a Google doc (like a Word doc) and share it with me. In a Google doc, once done, click on the "share" link. Start typing in "Graham" and my email should come up. Then share it with me. If you need the full email, it is grahamr@sfdsschool.org. If you have trouble with the Google doc, you may just put the definitions right in an email to me directly. We'll only do a few!
adagio
allegro
andante
forte
piano
dolce
grave
Be sure and Google "music definition" and then your word. Otherwise words like "grave" will have a whole different meaning that has nothing to do with music!
Remember, boys and girls, Jesus loves you! Your mom and dad love you. Your grandparents love you. And God is watching over all of us!
Friday: Since 4th grade music meets once a week, we will have one assignment / activity on Fridays. Since we are not meeting face-to-face and the Spring Musical is on hold, now would be a great time to explore other aspects of music. We will explore basic music notation and take a look back at a little music history. I may give a simple assignment so we can get a grade for your participation.
This week's assignment, due by Friday, March 27th: Do a little research for me on musical notation. You may look up the information on the internet. Answer the following questions for me. You may just email your responses.
Name four common notes in music.
What are the two most commonly-used clefs?
What are the main four voices in a choir?
Make a list of as many genres of music that you know (example Jazz). What is your favorite?
At the beginning of a piece of music (top left on the treble clef) there are usually some numbers, like a 3 sitting on top of a 4. What do those numbers signify?
