"Ghost" by Jason Reynolds is the first book in the "Track" series, focusing on a young boy named Castle "Ghost" Cranshaw. Ghost is a middle schooler with a troubled past; he’s dealt with family issues and violence, which has shaped his tough exterior. One day, he accidentally joins a track team led by a demanding coach, who sees potential in him despite his rough edges.
As Ghost navigates the challenges of running, he learns about discipline, teamwork, and the importance of facing his fears. The book beautifully explores themes of resilience, friendship, and the impact of one's environment. Reynolds’ lyrical prose and relatable characters create a compelling story that resonates with readers, especially those who have faced similar struggles. "Ghost" is not just about running; it’s about finding one's path and the courage it takes to overcome obstacles.
The students are going to be introduced to Fishbowl Discussions this quarter! These student led discussions will be taking place all year and they are one of my very favorite activities to watch as students grow in their progress rapidly throughout the year!
Fishbowl discussions are a dynamic and engaging classroom strategy that promotes active participation and deepens understanding of a topic. In this format, a small group of students sits in a circle (the "fishbowl") while the rest of the class observes. The inner circle discusses a specific question or topic, while the outer circle listens and takes notes.
The key benefits of Fishbowl discussions include:
Encouraging Participation: Every student gets the chance to speak, fostering a safe environment for sharing ideas.
Developing Critical Thinking: Students must listen actively and think critically about the discussions, enhancing their analytical skills.
Promoting Collaboration: This format encourages teamwork, as students must work together to express their thoughts and respond to each other.
Fostering Empathy: By listening to their peers, students gain different perspectives, which can lead to greater understanding and empathy.
To implement a Fishbowl discussion effectively, teachers should provide clear guidelines, select engaging topics, and encourage respectful dialogue. This method not only enriches classroom discussions but also cultivates essential communication skills that students will use throughout their education.
Don't forget to ask your student about these awesome discussions at home :) They are working so hard!
This year, our 7th grade Language Arts classroom is intergrating Magic School AI into our curriculum. Magic School is a platform designed to support teaching and learning. The goal is to enhance how we think, write, and study—not to replace effort or creativity, but to provide students with meaningful support along the way.
In our classroom, we’ll focus on these main tools:
Writing Feedback – Students will receive structured, actionable feedback to guide revisions and strengthen their writing voice, clarity, and organization.
Skill Work Tutors & Study Tools – These supports will help students practice targeted skills, review concepts, and prepare for assessments in a personalized way.
Character Chatbots – Students will engage in conversations with AI-powered “characters” from our novels and readings to deepen comprehension, spark critical thinking, and encourage discussion.
Idea Generators – Whether for brainstorming essay topics, creative writing prompts, or project ideas, students will have a starting point to help launch their thinking.
Throughout the year, we’ll also emphasize responsible use of AI—understanding how to use these tools as supports rather than shortcuts, and always keeping student ideas, voice, and effort at the heart of learning.
By integrating Magic School AI, our classroom will gain an extra layer of support, freeing up more time for rich discussions, deeper reading, and meaningful writing projects.
