July: Lab alum Brian Gulick (C'24) met up with Dr. T and collaborators from Los Alamos National Lab and the University of Illinois Chicago for six days of beamtime at the National Synchrotron Light Source.
June: More collaborative research at UAB was published in the Journal of Applied Physics. Click to learn more about the superconductivity and phase stability of a high-entropy (NbTa)0.55(HfTiZr)0.45 alloy under high pressures.
May: Charlotte Ganter and Lilly Daniels graduated from The University of the South. Congrats! Meanwhile, Dr. T is working at Ehime University in Japan to synthesize new hydrous mineral phases.
April: one of our collaborations with scientists at UAB was published in Physical Review B. Click to learn more about Superconducting dome and structural changes in LaRu3Si2 under pressure.
Dr. T was named an IMS Distinguished Faculty Scholar at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), where she will collaborate with Dr. Bethany Chidester Hopp. Lilly Daniels and Brian Gulick were also able to visit LANL and squeeze in a little research during their Spring Break.
Charlotte Ganter and Lilly Daniels passed their senior comprehenive exams. Congrats!
Dr. T went on sabbatical and visited the Physics Department at the University of Alabama Birmingham, where she will collaborate with Dr. Wenli Bi. This work was funded by an NSF Research Opportunity Award.
Dr. T visited Pennsylvania State University to give a talk as part of the PSU Geosciences Colloquium Speaker Series.
Dr. T was awarded an NSF CAREER grant of over $600k to study the influence of cation substitution on the hydrous phases of the lower mantle. This award will help fund undergraduate research for the next 5 years!
Brian Gulick has accepted a position as a PhD student in the Mineral Physics Institute at Stony Brook University. Congrats!
Máté Garai accepted a position as a PhD student of physics at the University of Colorado Boulder. Congrats!
Audrey Burch has accepted a position as an Admissions Counselor at Furman University after she graduates. Congrats!
In December, Dr. T headed to the American Geophysical Union where she chaired a co-chaired a session called The Earth Encompasses All: Transforming our Community with Diverse Perspectives. Brian Gulick was also at AGU, presenting the results of his summer internship.
In November, Máté Garai was a finalist of the 2024 Global Rhodes Scholarship. Congrats!
Brian Gulick spent his summer conducting research with Dr. Benjamin Gilbert at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory on the link between sagebrush and watershed drought resistance.
Over the summer, Máté Garai was selected to participate in the prestigious Misasa International Student Internship Program at the Institute for Study of Earth's Interior (ISEI) at Okayama University in Misasa, Japan.
In May, Christian Shushok had an article published in the Tennessean. Congrats!
In April, Charlotte Ganter, Brian Gulick, Máté Garai, and Dr. T flew to the National Synchrotron Light Source for several days of beamtime at the Frontier Synchrotron Infrared Spectroscopy Beamline.
