Plant Life

There are many different plants located at the EcoLab. Here are some of them: Devil's darning needle, red osier dogwood, cattails, goldenrod, juniper, and queen anne's lace. There is an invasive plant called autumn olive located at the EcoLab, too.

Goldenrod

Goldenrod is a flower found around the EcoLab. It is also known as the solidago. Larva may build a gall on the stem that protects it. The larva eats its way out. It is now a golden rod gall fly.

Juniper

The juniper is a short, prickly short bush that grows about three feet tall. These can be found most places at the EcoLab.

Queen Anne's Lace

The plant above has four different names, queen Anne's lace, bird's nest, wild carrot, and its scientific name, daucus carota. They live two years, the first year, it is short and green, and looks like a domestic carrot. The second year it is more often called queen Anne's lace. The picture above is the second year.

Devil's Darning Needle

The plant pictured above is a devil's darning needle. It is poisonous to humans. The devil's darning needle is a vine, and it has small white flowers on it.

Red Osier Dogwood

This plant is dogwood. It is a small shrub with red branches. Their is also a dogwood tree, but that is a different plant that is not to be confused with the shrub.

Cattails

These plants are called cattails. They grow around the pond and by the creek. The roots/tubers of these plants are edible. The tops of the cattails have the seeds in them. The part that holds the seeds supposedly look like corndogs.

Autumn Olive

Autumn olive is a highly invasive plant that is located at the EcoLab. They can grow 20' tall up to 30 feet wide. It is originally from Asia. It came to the U.S. in 1830. They are bright green. It also spreads rapidly in old fields. It poses a threat to open woods where fie is infrequent. It can survive in shade or sun.
