The History of the School Forest

Carl Scholz was a key figure in creating and fixing the EcoLab. He assisted in acquiring the property in 1962, and he also helped get this fantastic deal: $5,000 for 72 acres! The EcoLab was purchased with money "from a grant that was made available by unused funds in the state bounty program to reduce the populations of crows and other small animals that are considered varmints." An additional helper to name the forest was Warren Fisher (high schooler of Sevastopol), who achieved an airplane tour of Door County due to his creative name: Pioneer Ecological Reserve. The EcoLab had plenty of help to become the amazing forest that it is form many people.

Mike Madden was also important to putting together the Ecological reserve. He helped design the trails, took Sevastopol students to the EcoLab when he was a teacher, too. He was a 1967 Sevastopol graduate.

Carl Scholz was an important person in buying the EcoLab, and he cleaned it up and made the trails with Mark Madden. Carl was the principal of Sevastopol, and was loved when he was in the position, and after.

Brooke Tanck and Katie Grooters also helped revive the EcoLab after Mr. Madden and Mr. Scholz were retired, and they got Sevastopol students learning about the outdoors with the EcoLab again!
