Throughout the history of martial arts, creative thinkers have developed new technology that has enhanced the training, teaching and application of martial arts skills.
The various weapons and training curriculums are great examples of creative efforts and expression over the different eras. Going beyond the physical techniques, we see that equipment and training tools have greatly enhanced the martial arts and enable the practitioners to train at a higher level, more consistently and with better feedback and recovery.
In 18th Century Japan, Nakanishi Chuta designed protective armor called Bugo and a bamboo sword known as a Shinai for the art of Kendo. Then in the 19th Century, Jigoro Kano, the founder of Judo, pioneered the use of straw mats called Tatami, which enabled students to practice full force throws.
During the Mid-20th Century, Bruce Lee experimented with protective training gear, and the Kickboxing method of training and fighting. Jhoon Rhee, often known as the "Father of Taekwondo in America" polished this type of protective equipment and then introduced them to the growing tournaments.
Fitness training equipment like resistance machines, cardiovascular machines and all other tools for physical conditioning and rehabilitation also contribute to the further growth and development of martial artists. Elite athletes use modern training tools to reach the highest levels of their physical abilities, as well as therapy equipment to come back to the mat faster and stronger.
In addition, computer technology has transformed the martial arts and the entire world. Everything from better organization, communications and records - all of these are better, faster and easier with computers. Also, modern training equipment and even uniforms can contain sensors that register contact and this is used extensively in Fencing for example.
Videos and the Internet have enabled young students to explore martial arts around the world and communicate with teachers, peers and pioneers in an instant. There has never been more information on martial arts so readily available for anyone to access and learn from.
The new SetVR XL Unleashed is another perfect example of the power of technology and how it can impact a martial artist. Through this cutting edge VR game program, the martial artist can virtually experience the thrill of the fight and enhance their skills, mindset and fitness.
As we stand on the doorstep of a new era of technological growth, we must be ready to take full advantage and make technology serve the martial arts. It's exciting to think of all the possibilities that are just around the virtual corner.
