The crosses we receive in life are an opportunity for spiritual growth; for ourselves, friends, family, and even strangers. We have this chance to grow in imitating Christ in a life of Charity and Virtue.
Fr. John Hallowell's story is a beautiful testimony of redemptive suffering and healing. I encourage you to listen to it.

Scott Hahn on the value and meaning of suffering.
The Church teaches that human suffering has been given a new meaning in His Passion, Death, and Ultimate Victory over the Cross (cf. CCC 1505, CCC 618).
For this reason Saint Paul writes: "I rejoice in my sufferings for your sake, and in my flesh I complete what is lacking in Christ's afflictions for the sake of His body, that is, the Church" (Col. 1, 24). The joy comes from the discovery of the meaning of suffering, and this discovery is at the same time valid for others. The Apostle shares his own discovery and rejoices in it because of all those whom it can help—just as it helped him—to understand the salvific meaning of suffering (Salvifici Doloris, 1).
"We rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope." (Rom. 5, 3-4)
