Learning Modules
Students access the Learning Modules through the ALEKS Placement link found on MYSHU. See login information.
Learning Modules can be accessed for 12 months after taking the Initial Placement Assessment
Learning Modules provide an individualized learning path.
Periodic knowledge checks show progress and ensure mastery of topics.
Consistent work in the Learning Modules has been shown to improve assessment results.
Students must spend at least 5 hours working in the Prep & Learning Modules before 1st retake.
Students must spend at least 5 additional hours in the Prep & Learning Modules before 2nd retake.
A minimum 48-hour waiting period is required between retakes.
Nationally, 58% of students who spend at least 6 hours in the individualized ALEX PPL learning modules improve at least one placement level higher when reassessed. At Seton Hill University, students may choose to retake the assessment 2 times.
Working in the Prep and Learning Modules
The Components of the Prep and Learning Modules:
Progress Pie Chart: uses visual cues to depict a student's mastery of the course
Topics Carousel: allows students to easily navigate between topics they are ready to learn
Learning Pages: provides students with detailed and interactive learning resources before attempting problems
Student Reports: shows progress to reflect students' achievements throughout their work in ALEKS
Timeline View: shows progress over time and reflects rate of learning

Homepage
After viewing the results on the Initial Assessment, students are redirected to a personalized Homepage where students can find the ALEKS Learning Pie. The Learning Pie shows the number of topics that students have mastered in real time and which topics they still need to refresh. Selecting a slice of the Learning Pie shows the number of topics mastered, learned, and remaining in a specific topic category.
Starting on the Path to More Knowledge
Students are encouraged to work in the Prep and Learning Modules where they will practice "Ready to Learn" topics and review previously learned topics. Click on START MY PATH to begin. The Prep and Learning Modules determine which topics students are capable of learning based on prior responses. ALEKS PPL will adapt to students' needs.
While working in the Prep and Learning Modules:
Students may select which topics to tackle first. However, only those topics that are considered "Ready to Learn" will be available.
Students can view videos, see explanations, and practice problems on available topics in a self-paced, adaptive learning environment.
The Learning Pie updates to show Mastered (darker color), Learned (lighter color) and Not Yet Learned (grey) topics in real time.
Mastery is shown through periodic Knowledge Checks. Knowledge Checks include past and present topics to ensure retention.
