What are the requirements to join each program?
Dual Enrollment - Depending on the class that you want to take, there are certain requirements. All classes require you to be in good academic standing. You can see the specific requirements below:
Speech/ College Success - No Requirements
English Composition I: Completion of Speech, Minimum Scores on Reading/ Writing Accuplacer
Film and Society: Completion of English Composition I, Minimum Scores on Math Accuplacer
Sociology: Completion of English Composition I, Minimum Scores on Math Accuplacer
Early College High School - In order to join the Early College program, students must have completed Speech, English Composition I and taken the Reading, Writing and Math Accuplacers and received the minimum scores. If students do not get the minimum Math scores, they can also take the Intermediate Algebra class which is offered at Southeastern through Dual Enrollment every May.
What if I fail or withdraw from a class?
If you fail or withdraw from a class, you can have the grade rectified by taking a class with Massasoit directly. Reach out to the IDEA team at Massasoit to see what options you have on retaking the class and having the cost of the class reduced: https://massasoit.edu/academics/the-office-of-early-college-access/individual-dual-enrollment-access-idea/
Southeastern will also allow you to retake a Dual Enrollment class once assuming that there is a spot in the class.
Note that any ECHS or Dual Enrollment classes retaken will not replace a grade on a Southeastern transcript. While the old grade will no longer impact the GPA of the student, it will still be present on the transcript. For example, if a student has an “F” in a class and then retakes the class and gets a B, both the F and B will remain on the transcript but the F will no longer be averaged into a student’s GPA. This procedure is true at both Massasoit and Southeastern.
Where do students have the most difficulty?
We see most withdrawals and low grades at the very beginning of the program. Speech can be a difficult class and students may not be used to balancing college level work with their high school schedule
The College Success Seminar only allows you one absence.
The full semester classes only allow you four absences for classes that meet two times a week.
The first semester at college is difficult for any students, especially when they are starting Early College High School. The amount of course work can be overwhelming at times. However, once students get used to the work load, many students do well in the program!
