As a journalist, I find it important to discuss topics that may go unnoticed or ignored. Bringing up subjects that could be sensitive is the key to investigative journalism as well. The discussions that spark from researching controversial topics can be incredibly important to the growth of society in addition to the benefits that stem from exploring these subjects. I believe the best part of journalism is being able to research something you may not worry about otherwise, because it's a gateway to the world of investigation.
Being a teenage girl, I wanted to highlight the mental struggles many face constantly and represent the issues to everyone willing to read our feature. Our story takes outsiders through the mind of teenagers, as they deal with what "perfect" really means and constantly worry about what's expected of them. This article required an extremely personal interview with a student about their struggles with an eating disorder, which allowed me to gain a whole new perspective on other's experiences.
As I stated above, I enjoy discussing sensitive topics, a category immigration definitely fits into. When my partner and I discovered the art exhibit highlighting immigration we immediately started our research. While writing this article, we talked to the creator of the exhibit who was an immigrant and gave us a firsthand view into her life. The exhibit itself was contributed to by artists with a focus on the experience of an immigrant, something we couldn't explain on our own.
Amidst the hatred of the pandemic, there was a large increase in discrimination towards Asian Americans. My partner and I had been paying attention to recent hate crimes in our local news and ultimately made the decision to focus an article on it. While researching, we interviewed an intern at STOP AAPI Hate, an organization focused on halting the preconceived hate against Asian Americans. This article helped both my partner and I look further into the issue we were so commonly seeing, and also allowed us to share it with our peers and other readers.
March was an eye opening month, and was a lot more than just Women's History Month. My partner and I payed careful attention to social media and learned about the attention being brought to sensitive subjects such as sexual assault. In a quest to learn more, we reached out to a crisis counselor at Bay Area Women Against Rape. This article was one of the most challenging articles to write because we had trouble figuring out what to fit into the article. There was so much more we wanted to discuss but the eventual result reflected the importance of the month as well as the struggles of others.
