While I had never had any experience with digital design before my sophomore year, I still found it to be one of the most helpful elements for articles. Majority of the time, there was more I wanted to say but didn't have the space, and that's where the design element started to become a useful tool. It's the perfect place to simply gather research and create an easily read source of information. I started to use infographics especially, in just about every article I had written. They added a colorful element to the story while still keeping focus on the topic and often helped push the point of the story.
As we wrote our article on the increasing discrimination, we wanted more than just our writing. This led to research on the experiences of Asian Americans, and a focus on the change from before and during the pandemic.
The statistics we discovered were incredibly upsetting, and we felt they were absolutely necessary to include in our article. The purpose of this infographic was to educate readers on the problem at hand, and make it easy to read as well.
Delivering important information can often be a difficult task because people don't spend a lot of time fully reading articles. Visual design on infographics helped us get our information out in a simple way, rather than just listing statistic after statistic.
Not only are infographics easy to read, they also improve the visual quality of an article. Due to our article being mostly writing, the infographic added color and personality to keep our information organized.
Our research included surveys and case studies from reliable sources and compiling sources to create a quick and trustworthy center of information for readers to do individual research.
Infographics are one of the most helpful interactive elements for an article because they help include what you may not be able to write in an actual story.
While figuring out how to add more information to our King Tides article, we decided to focus on the sea levels. This helped get the important statistics out because the numbers didn't fit in our article's flow.
The emphasis on the rise was important to our writing because during our article we skimmed over the idea of the high tides. In correlation with the purpose of the king tides project, the infographic provided a visual assistance to the importance of the threat.
We created this infographic with elements we found online, paired with research from NASA and a timeline style setup. The infographic's size was the most helpful because it fit alongside our article perfectly and allowed readers to skim it and retain all necessary information.
The digital icons such as the waves allowed for a personal touch to an otherwise boring list, and made the visual aspect more appealing for readers. As a whole the timeline improved our writing by adding a simple way to collect important information.
