Design

In my journalism career, I have had the opportunity to try many different designs in order to enhance my work. Here is a display of all my designs that I have created so far.

ScotScoop Designs

Feature photo from 'The Forgetting Curve'

For my feature article, I  needed a photo to properly present my article. Obviously, forgetting is concept that is very abstract and cannot be captured with a phone or a camera. I also wanted to represent forgetting in some way, so I decided to use this design where the ideas seem to float away from the person's head. I spent hours on this design and I think it turned out pretty well.

Feature photo from "Betting companies and tribes 'gamble' over Proposition 27 advertisements

For this news article, there was no way I could get a real photo over a legislation and there were no creative commons photos representing this proposition, so I created this design on my own. It represents the different things a person thinks about when watching the advertisements that come with Proposition 27.

Infographics are an effective way of presenting information in a visually-appealing way. Here are the infographics I have created thus far in my journalism career.

All About Climate Change

I created this infographic in my article "Opinion: The United States should implement the carbon tax." I created this infographic so that I could supplement my article by illustrating the damages of climate change in the form of numbers and statistics. Sometimes, a visual description is not enough in order to depict climate change.

Memorization Strategies

I created this infographic for my article "The Forgetting Curve." One part of my feature article was how people try and combat forgetting, and this infographic supplemented proven ways to try and combat or at least slow down forgetting.

Causes of Forgetting

I created this infographic for my article "The Forgetting Curve." I wanted to portray some of the causes of forgetting, but I found that it would be hard to convey them with words. Instead, this infographic made these causes easy to represent.

AI Statistics

I created this infographic for the article "Opinion: Artificial intelligence should be embraced."  There were a lot of data points in this article, but conveying all the percentages in my article would have been unengaging and not as concisely delivering my opinion to the reader. Here, I used an infographic to convey these percentages and stats in a more appealing way.

6 Tips For Better Sleep

I created this infographic for the article "Opinion: Society deprives themselves of the power of sleep." In this article, I kept pushing my opinion on how sleep-deprived we are and the harm from it. In this infographic, I was able to display some of the potential solutions to our sleep-deprived society.

5 Facts About Deception

I created this infographic for a design project on William Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing. This infographic cannot be found on ScotScoop. Deception is found everywhere in the book, and I was able to portray some facts about deception itself in this infographic.

The costs of the Russia Ukraine war at the 6 month mark

I created this infographic for my news article "Putin's conscription policies prompt Russians to seek refuge."  This infographic portrays the devastation of the war, that people weren't really talking about during the time I created this article.

Disciplines of forensic science

I created this infographic for my feature "The science behind the law." The forensic scientist, Cindy Anzalone, talked a lot about how forensic science is just an umbrella term and the disciplines within that umbrella term hold many different interesting ways of solving crimes.

Popular online learning websites and how they work

I created this infographic for my news article "Online learning: a thing of the future or the past?" This infographic represented some of the cool websites that people regularly use for online learning in the modern day and how they teach people.

This infographic is from my article, "Opinion: Schools should implement more critical thinking." I wanted to visually explain that critical thinking is something that is respected within the education system, but not well understood nor well taught.

KnightLab Timelines: These are interactive designs that allow me to portray the history of something in a more fun and effective manner.

Here I used the KnightLab Timeline to depict the progression of NBA Superteams throughout the history of the NBA. This was for my article, "Opinion: The era of NBA superteams is over." This timeline can be found in the article and provides context for what superteams before. It helps supplement my argument over which superteams succeed and which superteams fail, with most failing.

I created this timeline for my article "Opinion: Apple is not innovating enough."  I used this timeline to depict the efforts Steve Jobs made during his time with Apple, and depict simply how much he accomplished in that small period of time. I used this to supplement my argument by comparing what Steve Jobs accomplished in that time period to Apple's current CEO: Tim Cook.

I created this timeline to add extra multimedia elements to my feature "The science behind the law."  Here I talk about how forensic science has been used in history and how new inventions have transformed the forensic scene. The most recent transformation has been DNA technology, which has been used to catch many notorious criminals.

For my article "Opinion: NASA has become complacement," I put the history of NASA into a timeline in order to depict how much they were innovating in the 60s and how little they are innovating today. Many of the sldies are about the accomplishments in the 60s and very few are from post 1980.

Flourish Charts: flourish designs allow data to be displayed in a visually appealing way and organize sets of numbers.

This flourish chart was created for my article "Biden's student relief plan sparks discussions on college expenses." In order to show how expensive college has gotten, I portrayed the exponential rise in expenses over the years.

I created this pie chart as a design element for my article "Online learning: a thing of the future or the past?"  This pie chart uses pew research data on how people feel about online learning, and I felt that it could be best represented in a Flourish pie chart.

I created this flourish chart for my article "Online learning: a thing of the future or the past?" I took a pew research survey for my section of the article on how online learning affected mental health and visualized how people's mental health was through a flourish chart.

For my article "Opinion: NASA has become complacent," I wanted to show how much budget impacts NASA. They have had a pretty high budget except for that spike in the 1960s. The reason for that spike is that they were doing so much with the organization and gettting a man on the moon.

In order to depict the rise of social media, I wanted to do so through a flourish chart on my article "Opinion: Some scientists do more harm than good."  I did this in order to show how many people are constantly being hooked by social media.

Other Designs

I was curious about which method of transportation produces the most carbon dioxide. This chart is not published, but it is eye opening into how flights and diesel cars produce so much carbon.

An assignment we had in class was to turn our features into Adobe InDesign spreads. I combined both my 3000 word feature and the visual elements into a cohesive six-page design.

This was a design I made for a project we did in journalism class on William Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing. In this design, I blended quotes, info, analysis, infographics, and visuals all into a two-page poster.
