Virus Hunters

This course is run as our GBIO203 special-topics course, and is currently intended for first-year honors students. In 2023, Southeastern joined the Howard Hughes Medical Institute's Science Education Alliance - Phage Hunters Advancing Genomic and Evolutionary Science (SEA-PHAGES) program. In this first semester, bacteriophages that infect soil bacteria are isolated, purified, and partially characterized. Over the winter break, two virus genomes are sequenced, and those genomes are annotated and gene functions are assigned in the spring semester.
