Advise student based on their high school cumulative GPA (12th grade, or latest on file)
If student is eligible to place into college-level Math and/or English based on their GPA, but their ACT subscores are low, discuss with the student their level of comfort in Math and English (writing/grammar, in particular). If they say they were not strong in one or more of those areas, recommend the corequisite Math and/or English (despite their GPA placement). They have the option to place into college-level Math and/or English, but we should help them make an informed decision about their perceived level of preparedness.
Request student to log into ACT to check their scores against what we have on file.
If you can see that student has score on file AND scores will make a difference on placement, have them request for their scores to be sent. Tell them to be sure to send their highest individual score, and NOT their superscore. Southeastern's "College Code" for requesting scores is 1608.
If student is able to request scores while in the meeting and the advisor is able to observe that the scores have been requested, it is fine to advise student based on the updated scores. They will need permission to enroll in said courses, however.
Request student to log into ACT to check their scores against what we have on file.
If you can see that they have higher score than what we have on file, AND if those scores will make a difference on placement (or scholarship eligibility), have them request for their scores to be sent. Tell them to be sure to send their highest individual score, and NOT their superscore. Southeastern's "College Code" for requesting scores is 1608.
If they are unable to get into ACT to request scores, or if they do not request the scores while in the meeting, advise student based on the scores at the present time. Be sure to make a note on the advising form about the situation and inform student that he needs to reach out to his advisor if and when his new scores are sent. It generally takes 1 - 2 weeks for scores to be received, processed, and posted to Workday once they are requested through ACT.
Issues sometime arise when students tell us that they should have AP, CLEP, or other credit, but the credit is not posted to their account. The following are possible scenarios and suggestions on how to handle them.
AP credit listed on a high school transcript is "considered unofficial" and "must be sent through their College Board to be considered official."
A copy of the AP/CLEP report submitted to their Application portal is not considered official.
Be aware that AP and CLEP taken at the end of this academic year (April/May) will not be posted in Workday t until mid-July
Ask the student the following questions:
1) What test did you take (Type of test - AP, CLEP, etc.) and ?
2) When did you take the test (or plan to take it? )
3) What score did you make?
Sometimes, students do not realize that they did not achieve the score needed to receive credit; or they assume we grant credit for a course that we do not offer (Ex., Environmental Science).
Occasionally the scores were sent to SLU before the student was admitted to the university. In this case, ask Mindy or Myranda to check Slate to see if they are posted there.
If the credit is NOT in any of the above three places:
AP, CLEP, and ACT scores are uploaded directly from College Board, if sent. If they were not sent, the student MUST log into their College Board account and request that the scores be sent to SLU.
Recommend the student log into their AP account thorough College Board and request that the scores be sent to Southeastern.
Encourage them to double-check their score while in to be sure they received an acceptable score.
If they took it this year (or are planning to take it this year), tell them the scores will not be received and posted until mid-July.
If credit is not posted in one of the above three places, advise the student based on their placement and academic history at that point. Ideally, if they are expecting credit that is not yet posted, advise around it for the time-being. For example, if the student is expecting to receive credit for English 101, do not advise the student for an English course at the time of advising. BUT, make a note on the advising form regarding the omission, and inform student to reach out to their advisor (or fys@southeastern.edu) once credit is received.
