School-Based Hearing Services and Medicaid Reimbursement
Local Education Agencies (LEAs) may seek Medicaid reimbursement for eligible school-based hearing services provided to students when services are required by an IEP or result from a failed hearing screening conducted by the school nurse. Billable services include audiology screenings for students who are difficult to test, comprehensive hearing evaluations for students who are deaf or hard of hearing or who fail a school screening, and audiology services provided as a related service under an IEP. To bill Medicaid, the LEA may enroll as a School-Based Audiology Medicaid Provider at no cost by submitting a completed provider application to the Division of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) School Health Services office for processing through MITS, with provider revalidation required every five years. LEAs may obtain services through a licensed Arkansas audiologist via employment or contract, provided the audiologist is individually enrolled with Arkansas Medicaid, and may also access support services through the Educational Audiology/Speech Pathology Resources for Schools (EARS) program offered by Arkansas Children’s Hospital.
