Homestead Studies

We visited a village near Tapola so as to study the local house types. The house type had a common diagram across the region. The front yard was called the Aangan. The first space in the house was the padvi. This was the most public space in the house,  where visitors and guests were welcomed. The padvi wrapped around the house to become the gotha at the back. Some parts of the padvi were used as kitchen spaces at times. The next space a few steps up, was called the osri. This was the inbetween space where people spent most of their time. The innermost space was called the ghar.  The ghar was used mostly for storage purposes. This space sometimes also had a chullah. We analysed these homesteads with the house type and the immediate landscape including the fields using the frameworks of  'The Pattern Language' by Christopher Alexander.
