Minimal Lengths
INTRODUCTION:
The research intends at exploring a minimal structural system using threads. This was done with the help of gravity and surface tension. It also helps in finding form through experiments.
INTENT & CONTEXT:
To achieve this, the experiments conducted by Frei Otto were studied. His research included the soap bubble experiment and wet woolen threads experiments. These experiments uses the concept of gravity and surface tension. Different types of threads and solutions of different viscosities are used to explore the possibilities of surface tension and how gravity acts on it. The intent of the five experiments is to: first, use soap water and revive as the solution with the threads 15% over-length. Second, to use water and revive solution keeping the 15% over-length constant. Third, to use white cement solution and make it on a bigger scale with the 15% over-length constant. Fourth, to create a randomness through a ratio of approximately 15, 25 & 35% over-length ang using white cement as a solution. Lastly, fifth is to make a form using the dimensions of a life sized chair. Also, side by side observations are conducted to test the rigidity of different types of threads when subjected to different liquids/solutions.
